my daughter just received an e-mail from:

security@microsoft.com

It has an attached: patch.exe.

the text indicates the patch is needed for recent viruses.

Does anyone know if this could be a valid e-mail. I am
very sceptical!!

Bruce, Microsoft and Symantec will notify its users of
new virusus on the loose, via news groups, chat rooms,
etc, but Microsoft will not send anything in a Mass
mailing form such as your daugther received. When in
doubt, throw it out. Please see the URL for below which
speaks to the attachment you have received. It is a Worm,
do not open it. VBS.Paspec@mm is a mass-mailing worm that
sends itself using Microsoft Outlook. The email will have
an attachment named Patch.exe.bat. There have been no
reports of this worm in the wild.
Have a Great day Sir.

I received this about 2 weeks ago myself...It was nicely
done and seemed really legit....DONT OPEN IT....It's the
W32.Gibe@mm virus...I was unsure myself, so I saved it to
desktop, then checked it with NortonAV...Good thing I was
skeptical..
To my knowledge,,,Microsoft makes available patchs for
download,,,But I dont think they will send them via
email..

Be forwarned:

Apparently the latest incarnation of this critter is very well formatted
with HTML--it's getting more convincing, like the identity-theft bank and
ISP emails.
