 - Stopping virus emails at server Does anyone know if it is possible to stop all the recent emails containing the swen virus at the server. I have been receiving about 100 emails a day. Unfortunately I stupidly infected myself when I opened the attachment the first time I got the email on the 18th but I managed to disinfect my computer and downloaded the updated virus definitions from Norton. So although I have bocked the senders on my email program and Norton is intercepting and disinfecting, I am still getting huge amounts of the emails in my deleted folder and constantly getting the Norton popups saying that it has cleared an infected email. It is driving me to distraction. Will it ever stop? Can I get it stopped at the server so that it doesn't even get to my computer or do I have to change my e-mail address which would be a real pain, not only to notify everyone but also because I have quite a few subcriptions to various things.  - Two security questions about Window XP Pro and IE6 Is there anyway other than through a 3rd party firewall to put a computer into a stealth mode? ZoneAlarm has an option to hide the "private header". I'm using IE6 with latest updates. Does WindowsXP Pro with latest updates have any ability to help a computer resist the urge to answer a ping? In a post from several days ago about setting up better security there was a site listed that actually tested several different security issues. Swem then extracts any email addresses that it can find and saves them" That is how it gets the email addresses on infected machines. So if user had newsgroups or emails downloaded locally like most do when you read messages.  - Is there a Way Is there a way to stop the bulk e-mail of the Update Hoax from MS Security. I do not have the virus, but I am getting all the bulk e-mail. I have the latest Office and Windows patches and updates on this computer. Is there someway to stop it from even passing through the e-mail server or just have this blocked at the server. My husband and I need internet access for work therefore, we access the internet via Internet Explorer. We don't have AOL and MSN. So that if any hacker does compromise your system, they will envision you?re posting in all the news groups listed. Perform the same with Yahoo Egroups. Which Newsgroups you download first is a choice that you can make. For example: I?ve created the order of my Newsgroups by picking a random oddball group I would never subscribe to, add a Newsgroup I visit on a regular basis, then back to the oddball. By downloading the Newsgroups you visit first or second on a regular basis, this shows a profile of your history. B. Bookmark some Websites just for the heck of it, this can confuse a hacker and make them believe you visit all the sites you have bookmarked. Come up with a few interesting kinky, or medical sites for the heck of it. To keep the hacker guessing, you must periodically visit these Sites. Every visit to a site leaves a marker on your computer that records the date and time that you visited. C. Make up fake e-mail friends and input any e-mail address in your address book. This will definitely scramble the hackers minds. Hackers might wonder if your computer system is a "honeypot." A "honeypot" is a computer setup to record and watch the actions of hackers. Should a hacker send an e-mail to the fake address and have it bounces back to them, it will confuse them. D. Make up fake correspondence using Word or Works and address a letter with the impression that you were writing the "FBI" about the hacking activities that you have found. E. When my computer system was found to be compromised and I realized the hackers could bring down my system at any time, I was inspired to do the following: I opened up notepad on my desktop and typed; "hacker activity is being tracked by the FBI", and left this window open on my desktop. F. Join a few List Servers and Mailing Lists to divert attention so that the hackers don?t know your real intentions on the Internet.  - Viruses, Worms, IP Addresses, and Different Computers? I made an earlier post about my being bombarded with 400-500 virus/worm email messages a day. This is despite being up to date with all the AV's, MS updates, and the like. I turn off my machine at night and the next morning 8 hours later I have ~200 email virus messages waiting for me. I am an oldtimer network guy (SS7 on Unix platforms) and unfortunately am not too knowledgeable in the TCP/IP arena or Win-XP. My concern now is being "hacked" over the internet, not by email but by some other technique using my IP address. (I do know that the current SWEN email scam simply generates tons of messages for my specific email address and opening an email independent of IP address or computer causes the problem). So I have the following questions: 1) Do I get a different IP address every time I connect to the internet? (I use Earthlink dial-up...like I said I'm an oldtimer) 2) Can two users share the same IP address from a remote perspective and then the ISP multiplexes to the correct destination? 3) I have read that hacker's can somehow send malicious code to my machine and get my personal info (eg - passwords, credit card numbers, etc). Can they do this other than email? If so, how? (a concise explanation will suffice) 4) How would my specific computer be targeted if my IP address changes? Are the hacker's programs just "out there" continually pinging (or whatever) to see what they can find? 5) If I used a different computer would I be just as susceptible or is my computer on a (s)hit-list? Or is my email address used to get my current IP address and then an invasion is attempted? (Again I know the email virus issue is still relevant on a different computer). 6) Fortunately the email issue has been somewhat mitigated in that I have been using Webmail. But I have a question: How is the issue of opening an attachment handled with Webmail? Is there a danger in this? I know for the majority of you these are very dumb and basic questions, but I appreciate your help--this current SWEN worm/virus is my first security problem and now I am pretty worried.  - can not log in interactively On my DC I am locked out as the Administrator with a message stating that the local computer policy does not allow you to log on interactively. I have restarted with out directory services and am able to change the local computer policy settings however, I can not change the Domain level security settings because I do not have AD available to me. I have tried using NTRIGHTS with a message of "success" When I restart, I still can not log it. I have also tried connecting remotely using terminal services but still recieve the same message. Is there anything I can do, short of reinstalling to remove this right at the domain level. I am able to log into a client computer as administrator and I installed the administrator tools but was, once again, not able to get access to AD.  - Is Cumulative Patch OK? I run Windows 98. I received an e-mail today supposedly from MS telling me to download "September 2003, Cumulative Patch." The e-mail had the MS logo and looked real. The download was an attachment, "Installation89.exe". When I clicked to open it, I got an MS Security Warning window that said the publisher could not be determined because an authenticode signature was not found.  - MS03-039 Apply Problems I am trying to apply the MS03-039 patch on NT 4 (6a) workstations. I have a batch of particulary troublesome boxes that won't accept the patch for whatever reason. When I run the patch it appears to have successfully run, says the patch is installed, and asks to reboot. However, upon the reboot the patch isn't listed in the registry, or in the add/remove programs listing and the files that should have been dropped don't version increase to the correct version. I sent the patch down through Marimba with the silent and suppress reboot switches, as well as connecting to the boxes with remote control software and running the patch manually with the gui. The patch always returns an exit code of zero to marimba and never returns an error from the gui. Anyone have some suggestions to try? I spoke briefly with MS's phone support and they said that it would be OK if I just bundled up the three files and new registry keys and dropped them onto the machines. At work, run Windows Update, and choose "personalize Windows Update" in the
left pane.

Look for a setting to enable Windows Update Library link to be displayed.

Go to the Windows Update Library and search according to your home OS and
Service Pack level.

Use the HFNETCHK tool from www.shavlik.com to get a list of what you are
missing at home.

MBSA uses HFNETCHK to do patch detection.
