Hello,
My question is regarding the patch for the subject
security bulletin. Does the patch, remove the
vulnerability in the current version installed on the
computer or does the patch upgrade the version of MDAC to
a version that is not vulnerable? For example, if my
computer is running MDAC 2.7 and I apply the patch, does
it upgrade me to 2.7 sp1 or 2.8? Or does it leave me at a
patched version of 2.7?

Every time I reboot my computer my internet start page
keeps defaulting to MSN website. Whats all that about cos
it sure is irritating and very intrusive.

I think that someone has been trying to email me something
with the virus on it and I haven't opended anything but I
also noticed they're sending me email with the domain from
people i'd normally email. i was wondering if anyone knew

Windows XP key not working,Outlook not working, does anything MS makes works ?
bought a Windows XP upgrade disk from a friend and it
installs ok, but has this dumb key on it that starts out
with "XXXXX-640-blah-blah-blah" Whats the matter with it,
is the installer or the software no good ?????? I paid
good money for this crappe and get this and it cleaned out
all my email and Kazaa.
Next MS mess, how come Outlook 2003 (has almost the same
bozo key number) does not send my messages to the forums
and I have to use this way ? Is it not working too ? Like
do they check any of these programs before they sell
them ?? I paid almost $100 USD for this Office 2003
Professional and Windows XP Professional and both are
messng up. Most of my games dont work no more and the
thing is slow as shite on a stick, what bozos write this ?
Or did I do something wrong on install ? Where did my mail
go and howcome its still the old crappie Internet 6, where
is Internet 7 ? how ca I get this junk off my harddisk ? I
tryed to uninstall the stupid things and now it wants my
Windows XP disk in the drive and I sold it right after I
got it installed. what about AVG ??????I finally got that
toad working and now it is not even there and I cant get
it working neither. can somebody tell me what to do to fix

cookie bars
I have recently had to put up as many guards as possible
to keep someone out out of my pc
Iv put up so many, that now I have difficultly getting
into some things eg. yahoo mail, and other sites I often
frequent.
Too many cookie barriers probably, but I dont know how to
correct this.

NT User Policy (Password expire)
I am thinking about forcing our users to change there
password every 90 days via user manager policies. One of
the problems I am running into is when will this effect my
users? What I need to know is if I set this on the first
of March will this force my long time users to change

New enterprise CA
I want to replace a single-box Windows 2000 enterprise root CA with
another three-tier one based on Windows Server 2003. Is it possible to
migrate the existing certificates from the old PKI CA to the new one -
and allow me to switch off the old one?
I have read the this type of action should be supported in a PKI, but

Application log
Hello, I am having a problem with my application log
getting full all the time with the message I have no idea
how to take care of. Think It has something to do with
security policy. I am in a test environment with two
windows 2000 servers, a PDC and a BDC. The application log
warning message is "security policies are propogated with

Hello - We have a SUS server in our environment and we use
AD group policy to force critical updates to Win2k and XP
clients. I read someplace that there was registry edit
that would enable NT and win9x clients to use a SUS
server - However I can't find the info any ware. - Can
anyone help??

I was sent an email from"microsoft" How do verify it's
authenticity? It says it has an attachment for me to
install immediately. Can I send it to Microsoft to verify
it's authenticity before opening the attachment. This
email seems suspicious to me!

Secure Site Problem
Folks, I used AdAware and Spybot S&D which helped get rid
of junk, but still cannot get into only one bank secure
site. I can get into other secure sites like 401, stocks
etc. Have 128 bit and all the updates. Get
message "specified CGI application misbehaved by not
returning a completee set of HTTP headers. The heades it
did return are Unexpected error in module hb.exe. Could
not load control file" I used to always get into this
site and suddently cannot. The bank says Its my IE
problem not theirs. Have played with all IE settings.
Have SSL2.0 and SSL3.0 enabled. Have been working on this
for a month without success. Can anyone pls help with

MS Update Downloads
For the past five days or so, each time I log on, the
Downloading MS Updates icon appears in my systems tray
and shows a status of downloading updates. This will
happen several times throughout the day, however, I never
receive the dialog box telling me that updates have been
downloaded and are ready to install. Prior when the
download was completed, the dialog box would appear to
advise you of that. Why is there a continual session of
downloads, but never any status as to what is happening
with them?

ip masking question
Running XP w/ built-in firewall activated. When I got to
auditmypc.com it shows my system is secure. So far, so
good. However, there are some websites and services that
claim to mask your ip address from advertisers if you
type a url into their web page instead of into your url
window. However, when I test those claims by typing
www.auditmypc.com into those sites' windows then click on
Privacy Test and choose Option 1, that excellent site now
shows all kinds of open ports and lists the various
Trojan viruses that exploit them.
Most of the sites/products do not seem to actually mask
the ip address at all and auditmypc.com is able to detect
that. All show numerous vulnerabilities and open ports.
One site appears to mask the ip but still shows some
vulnerabilities.
Are those vulnerabilities 1) only vulnerabilities on the
proxy server, or 2) does IE/XP allow those
vulnerabilities to be opened on my system even if the
firewall is activated?
Are there any free sites/services/products that actually

corrupted dial up
everytime i connect to the net i am directed to a site
www.coolsearcher.com, it appears to have downloaded a
program onto my computer even though i have the norton
antivirus system and i find myself unable to delete this
program. hope someone can help me as i am not the most

Outlook Express
This is truly scary how long I have been on this computer
just to find an email address to write for help on
OUtlook. Is there an easy website or access to get here
faster?? My question is I have upgraded to Explorer #6
and some security for my Outlook. Now many attachments
come in faded(they cannot be clicked on) and when the
email is opened it states "OE removed access to the
following unsafe attachment.." So I have gone into help
repeatedly and found no answer on how to remove that for
that particular attachment as many of these attachments
are safe. Can you help me? I sure hope this is the right

EFS
How can I recover an EFS ecrypted file(s) if an NTFS file
system crashes. NTOSKERNEL is not loading, I tried,
fixboot, also fixmbr, chkdsk reports unrecoverable
allocation units, possibly bad sectors. System hangs at %

privacy check
Several times over the past couple of weeks I have noted
a little symbol in the lower right hand corner of my
screen near the time. When I place my curser over it,
it says, "security check." Clicking on it has no effect,
and in a few seconds it disappears. This happens while
I am reading one of my email accounts, or sending an
email. It may happen at other times without me noticing.

hijacked dialup?
When I start/restart my winMe pc, something tries to dial
out. I have connection set to ask to connect. I usually
cacel the operation, and whatever it is does not try
again. What I want to know is HOW do I find out what app.

Censored E-mail
I was without a computer for a while and finally set up
my new one.
When I went to review all my E-mail received, I found two
thirds of the messages had been censored with the

3rd Party Password Recovery - Free
I (actually my sister-in-law)cannot remember the password
used to set the Content Advisor password in Internet
Options on the Control Panel and is now having trouble
accessing just about everything.
I read another post on this website with someone having a
similar problem, but more information was required.
The computer in question is running Windows 98. The
Content Advisor was originally used to restrict the kids

An HTML named instant access has invaded my system and

Spyware - Please Help
Hi, I think I may have some kind of spyware installed on
my computer and I can't seem to get rid of it. Here is
the description of the problem. One day I noticed a
folder titled "Links" in my favorites (bookmarks) and I
wasn't sure if it was installed with the IE installation
or what. I deleted the folder and closed IE. The next
time I opened IE, the folder had reappeared. Basically,
I can't delete this folder from my favorites. When I
close and reopen IE, it will always come back. There
isn't anything in this folder, it's just an empty folder
called "Links". I've run both Lavasoft - AdAware and
Spybot - Search and Destroy. They both cleaned stuff off
of my computer, but they didn't fix this problem with
the "Links" folder appearing in my favorites. I don't
really download too many programs, but I guess all it
takes is one. I have Internet Explorer 6 SP1 installed.
Does this sound like a Spyware problem to you? Do you
know of any better Spyware programs available. Thanks in
advance for any help in fixing this problem.
One more thing, let me know if this post doesn't belong
in this newsgroup (I looked all around and I thought this

clear memory of boxes
anyone know how to get rid of the list of words that pop
up when u start typing in a box. for example, search
engines remember all your searches, hotmail remembers all
your subjects etc. i'd rather not have these things

An adult site (portal searching.com)seems to have acquired
my e-mail address.Its homepage has replaced my yahoo
homepage each time I launch my pc.Do I need my pc to be

emails with attachments
I have emails in my Outlook Express inbox that have
attachments that I originally was able to open. Now I can
not open them and I see a message at the top of such
emails (opened with the drop down window) that says "OE

they weren't unsafe a month ago.

Lost my way in Office 2003 Security Land: macros and addins
I am an experienced software architect. I am "poweruser"user of Office, have
experience in VBA (Access, Outlook, Access --> Word, Access --> Outlook,
Outlook --> Access).
I am retired now, use computer on;y for private purposes, in a home network
with few Win XP Pro and Win ME systems, ADSL to internet, external website.
And, now, I have problems with security in Office 2003.
I should use high security level, with "trust all installed addins"
cleared.
To illustrate my problems, I will start Word.
1) Before the Word window opens, I get a first warning: Adobe PDFMaker 6.0
is in the menubar and I have to choose whether I want that or not.
2) Then I get a second warning: MS XML Toolbox has a toolbar, and I have to
decide upfront whether I want that or not.
3) I used to have ScanSoft OmniPage 14 in the File menu and I had to decide
whether I want that or not. (When fiddling around, I have succeeded in
letting OmiPage disappear and I don not know yet know how to restore that:
it was not in the addin list!)
This all each time I start Word.
My first problem therefore is: What to do with all these goodies that have
become a nuisance?
My second problem has to do with VBA. I cannot afford to have a certificate
for code signing, all my programming is private, just for my home network.
Can I selfcertify and make myself a trusted publisher?

Recommended ports to leave open for BASIC inet access.
Hello,
I was wondering new of a site where I can get a list of
ports that I need to leave open to use basic internet
access. I would like to configure my router to block all
ports and only allow those that are necessary. Al I can
think of off the top of my head are 53, 110, 25, 80. I
am more than certain there are more I just can't seem to
find out what they are. If there are any services that
we use that require additional ports I can add them as I
need them.
