I would like to set up a password upon opening my computer.
I didn't do this when I first got the computer.
Can anyone tell me how to go about doing this?
I"m working with windows 98 SE.
Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Windows 98SE simply isn't designed for this sort of security, I'm afraid.

If your bios allows you to set a boot password, this can be of some
use--although with access to the hardware, it isn't foolproof.

Otherwise, you need to look at third-party solutions for this kind of
functionality--and I don't have a good list of this sort of thing I'm
afraid.

Windows 98 cannot protect your files or computer access with a password.
The password only serves to setup a profile of preferences. Best to
think about getting a Windows XP computer.

Hi Kent,
Thanks for your reply.
What I am trying to do is keep my grandchildren off the
computer when they are being punished. I'm not concerned
about the security aspect of it.
Thanks again.

Ah, then consider setting a BIOS boot password. I expect you don't have
a motherboard manual, but if you can press the right key (DEL, F1, F10)
when you boot to enter the BIOS setup, look around and see if you can
set a password that must be entered before the computer is allowed to
boot.

DO NOT FORGET THIS PASSWORD. BIOS security is a lot harder to crack than
Windows security.

You might also try something like removing the mouse. Or, if you have a
wireless keyboard or wireless mouse, put them in a locked drawer.
Another simple idea is to place the computer in the family room or
kitchen nook where they cannot use it without being seen.

That reminds me of an old Monty Python skit "How not to be seen" that
spoofs BBC documentaries.

Hi Kent,
Thanks a million. I never thought of something so simple
as removing the mouse. That will definitely take care of
the problem.

One caveat to that. With a USB mouse you can pull it anytime whether the
system is on or not. It might complain that you didn't "stop" the mouse
first, but you can't lose data or crash the machine by unplugging or
replugging a USB mouse.

A PS/2 mouse should only be plugged or unplugged when the system is OFF.
Otherwise you get a freeze or a crash.
