    - Scanning schedule? Is there a recommended schedule for scanning a PC for viruses/trojans/malware/etc.? I use most of the programs suggested in this newsgroup (Spyware Blaster, Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, WinPatrol, CW Shredder, etc.), plus I have active anti-virus and firewall in place. I run each of the scans daily, and I always seem to find something lurking. At times this seems like paranoia, but I'm trying to prevent greater problems. Is daily too often? Or is there no such thing as too often? The problem is that these scans take quite a while to run. Any recommendations would be appreciated! Tag: web page/ security message Tag: 62716

    - logon screen Could any of you wonderfull people help me with this?! When my computer is left standing it logon screen comes on and locks the computer, however when i am downloading music it means that it stops the download and i have to start from where i left off again. I want to be able to leave it for a while so i can at least get a few tunes. How can i turn this off so the computer does not lock?     - Sp2 problems(that MS won't solve), and solution to Restore Point sp2 problem; On many newgroups I have seen that Sp2 caused Restore Point problems. Sp2 install had turned off "Task Scheduler Service". However, after many emails, chat sessions, etc. with MS they never were able solve the Outlook Express problem - after sp2: OE option "Block images and other external content in HTML e-mail" has disappeared. OE crashes when I open attachments, cannot edit email messages. Now I know that Sp2 has some serious bugs. I much regret ever having installed it. All it did was mess up my computer and waste alot of my time. Microsoft should not have released this CD until the bugs were fixed. I get the feeling that I have been used to "test" this product for Microsoft so they can receive free testing. Even after uninstalling Sp2 my Outlook Express was not fixed, and by then the restore point that I had set before install of Sp2 was gone. MS gave up trying to fix the problem; probably does not want to pay an American expert to resolve the problem.     - XP Update 2 New Security Since I updated XP to update2, I now get the Red Shield firewall which Pops up on my screen multiple times daily.     - Anti tracks Recently I came across a company offering what they call anti track software. It claims to free up HD space by removing unneeded files. It is by right utilities. www.rightutilities.com Is this kind of program necessary to improve security? I usually remove cookies and temp internet files after each session by using the IE properties dialog box, as well as the history folder. Does this kind of program do it more effectively?     - Windows Firewall turns off automatically upon restart I'm using XP with SP2 and I've enabled the Windows Firewall. However, if I log off, shut-down, or just restart Windows, the Firewall has been disabled. I re-enabled it and tried restarted several times and each time the Firewall gets turned off upon reboot.     - Domain Admin and Exchange Admin Group One member of our security team has requested to be made a member of the Domain Admins and Exchange Admins group. I see this as being a risk with his past experiences. How can I give him rights to create domain user and exchange mailboxes without giving him rights to the groups above.     - access denied on update folder Hi; I have a windowsxp prof system (latest updates and patches, using updated AV software and firewall all the time).. I use C: for as a OS drive, D: for applications and E for data (with some exceptions since not all applications allow me to install them on the D drive) I notice i have a folder in the root of D, that is named something like: D:\0e1c386b6050a1e.......and some more random characters This folder contains 8 files ( $shtdwn$.req , empty.cat, msdxm.ocx, spmsq.dll, spuninst.exe, wmp.dll, wpm.dll, wpmcore7.dll. and wmpcore8.dll) and one folder named update. I ran a trojan check (from windowssecurity.com) on my system and that told me that the update folder was not accessible. So I checked and it turned out to have a read only attribute. I switched this off, using the regular dialogue, clicked OK and found out that its read only attribute was turned on again. Of course read only by itself should not forbid me to read the folders content. Checking google I found out that the mentioned files are related to windows mediaplayer and internet explorer. I can't help to wonder if I have some kind of nasty software in that folder, though my system runs fine and my isp isný complaining about spam or virussen on my machine. I receive a pop-up window telling me that my MSN messenger has a buffer override security issue and that I need to go to the following website to download a patch: http://www.windowspatch.net/ Is this an authorized Microsoft website or is it a scam site trying to get people to download virus or malicious code? If you were able to access that website before, try adding it to your
trusted Web Content Zone assuming you do trust it to not be a malicious
website. See the link below for more details on how to use web content
zones. If it is not a https secure website you will have to uncheck
"require server verification" before adding the website. --- Steve
