When the reboot countdown begins, do this:

start, run, shutdown -a <enter>

This will prevent the shutdown from proceeding, and allow him to get
patched.

All three steps--none of them involving great expense--are important in
keeping him safe from the kind of hazard he's facing now.

In particular, I'd strongly advise a firewall ASAP--before patching, even.
