Any blaster worm security patch for windows98..??
My all users are Windows 98 based. I saw the blaster worm
security patch for windows XP/2000/NT. But there is
nothing written Windows 98 vunerability regarding this
worm or about patch for it.
I tried to find online support, but there is no specific
email id for writing my query to Microsoft Tech. Support
regarding this issue.
If somebody knows the answer, then Help me out please..... Tag: microsoft windows server 2003 Tag: 28239
Using Group Name in an Internationalized application.
Hi,
I am seeking the opinion of people that have implemented the use of
Group policies in internationalized applications.
In our application we have some core components that have to validate
the credentials of users, for instance we check if a user is a member of the
"Acme Administrators" group or "Acme Users" user. The problem comes from the
fact that in our french version the groups will be named "Acme
Administrateurs" and "Acme Usagers", so we cannot search by group name. One
obvious solution is to store in the registry the SID's of the variaous
groups we have created and lookup by SID's instead of names.
Are there any other way?
Thank you!

anti-MSblast program run, still evidence of worm in system?
Sorry if this has been covered and I missed it. We ran the
anti-worm program-- which said the worm was found and
eliminated. We downloaded/installed the patch. Why when we
search files using the search function in XP does it
appear that there's a file related to the MSblast worm:
msblast.exe-3646SF... C\WINNT\Prefetch with a date and
time? This has occured on both of our infected computers.
When we search the directory through dos as outlined in
one of the instructions sheets on this website, however,
it says the virus/worm isn't in the system.
Any idea what all this means, and how to straighten it
out? Thanks. Tag: microsoft windows server 2003 Tag: 28233

blasterworm?
I was using a computer that belongs to a friend of mine to check email
when all of a sudden it just started rebooting itself. Then I saw the

supposed attack on the windows update site this saturday 16th august 2003
can anyone tell me what is the likelyhood of being
infected with the hacker attempt of the windows update
site this saturday. as i believe the attack will be in
the form of a worm that is designed to attack internet
explorer . unfortunetely i am not able to acces online
the windows update patches list at this time (although i
am fully updated until july 2003) i am worried that when
i go back online i wont have been able to install the
necessary update that is required (if it is required)
before the 16th and so if anyone can shed some light on
this subject - which patch i need - i would be most
grateful.

We would like to highlight that irespective of the client having microsoft
outlook patch installed or not , Groupshield 5.0 with sp2 on Exchange 5.5
with sp4 does not detect the virus email in the first place when the email
arrives at the exchange server . Only when the virus comes to the users mail

We would like to inform that we have checked the same infected email when
sent to exchage 2000 with sp3 and groupsheild 5.2 it gets detected and
cleaned before reching to the users mail box . Groupsheild generates a alert

Kindly pls work out the solution ASAP to resolve the issue at the

RATE MY ANTI WORM IDEA (microsoft vs Worm)
why doesnt microsoft use its port 135 weakness to its
advantage and send's the patch to everyone's computer
just like the worm is spreading?>
then have the patch automatically install itself into a

done. it shoots of to another computer. like the virus
it spreads, but unlike the virus it would always win.

Unable to access https:// (SSL) sites with either IE or Netscape
Boy, is this one a doozy. Hopefully I found the right
board for this.
We're running on Windows Millenium Edition and using a
256KB cable modem for internet access. I've downloaded
both Internet Explorer 6 SP1 and Netscape 7.1, which were
updates to this computer. We've checked the encryption on
IE6, which shows cipher strength of 128 bits. Yet neither
IE nor Netscape has been able to access any site with an
https:// (SSL) tag (including but not limited to: .NET
Passport, Union Planters online, SprintPCS, Clout.com,
etc.) for the last week or two on this computer.
I've checked with HP's support site (the computer is an HP
system), and they sent a detailed suggestion that I
followed in full, and it ended up not solving the
problem. I've called Madison Telecommunications (our
ISP), and they sent me the IE High Encryption Pack
4.0, but it was not valid for Windows ME, so THAT didn't
work. Posting on this board seems like our last option.
If there is anyone out there who may know why we're unable
to access these (and other) SSL sites and how to correct
the problem or knows someone who DOES (we know for sure
that it's not msblast.exe, it's nowhere to be found on our
system), your help is needed, wanted, and fully
appreciated by myself and the rest of the family here.
This has been driving us up the wall as of late.
Thanks!

win32info.exe
Hi all,
While I was checking Registry Key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersio
n\Run for W32.Blaster.Worm as recommended by Microsoft
security alert. I found a value name win32info with the
value data "c:\winnt\system32\win32info.exe /noconnect". I
check the property of the file and found that it has no
version information like company name or internal name.
Try search for the file name on Microsoft Website and
www.cert.org but found no information there. I do have
antivirus software (grisoft) and adaware software install
on my machine as recommend by and MVP on this newsgroups,
it does not report anything wrong with this file. I am not
sure if this .exe file got installed by one of the many
software of my machine. Any one have an idea what
this .exe file migth be.

blaster worm patch executed but was it successful?
I somehow managed to download the patch and execute it on
my Windows XP 32 bit system. Took about 7 minutes to
download and a few more to execute and then the time to
restart my PC. Then, I also did the FixBlast.exe at
www.securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FixBlast.exe ;
it did indeed find the virus and delete a file.
I went back to the MS website to get the instructions for
verifying the patch was in (many years of working on
computers and I don't trust them, can you blame me)
I verified the ole32.dll, rpcrt4.dll and rpcss.dll files
for date/time, version number and size. Version numbers
all matched. Dates matched but times appear to be off by
1 hour per the MS Knowledge Base: KB823980. My system
now shows 12:14 pm but KB823980 says they should be 19:14
GMT. Central Time (on daylight savings time) is GMT-6
hours per the time zone converter it says to use. Also
the sizes were not the same. All of the files on my
system after the patch was executed are slightly smaller
in size.

Win2k SP3 + MS03-026 = No desktop upon reboot
In patching for the W32.Blaster.worn I have downloaded the
following update:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/0/1/f/01fdd40f-efc5-
433d-8ad2-b4b9d42049d5/Windows2000-KB823980-x86-ENU.exe
and installed it on a Windows 2000 Professional Service
Pack 3 IE 6.0 computer. When the computer reboots, I get a
blank screen after login.
Doing a Ctrl-Alt-Del allows me to run task manager. I look
and notice explorer.exe is not running. Doing new task, I
cant start it. Looking at the Event log, I get Com+ Event
System service hung on starting error (Event 7022).
Rolling back the patch and a reboot brings everything back
up again.
I have scanned for the virus and its not on the computer.
I have verified my file permissions on %systemroot% and %
systemroot%\system32 ... I have reinstalled IE, I have
done everything I can think of, but I cant seem to get the
computer to reboot without this happening (have disabled
NAV too trying to install it) .

Local Admin Priv able to access local shares
Hello all,
I want to first say a big thank you for any and all comments and feedback.
The issue is I noticed that a windows 2k and above machine that is a member
of a 2k domain when logged in locally as the local administrator can access
other systems local shares. Example: computer A can access
\\computernameB\c$
My question is how is this so? (I must have modified the local security
policys or domain security policys). And how can i change it so this is not
accessible. I do not Joe Smoe to log in locally as a admin to his system and
look at the CEO's hard drive and begin to have fun.
All feedback is welcomed.
