I have a flash USB 2 memory stick which was working perfectly. It now thinks
it is a security device (not a mass storage device) and the computer (or any
computer) can't open it

- any suggestions what I've done or how I can access the valuable data on
the stick

May be its bundled with the "security device"..Now a days its very common to
see the flash drives with biometric bundle.....
You may want to uninstall the Hardware and re-install the drivers....

Sometimes my usb stick acts funny when its still locked. It cant read the
data on the stick. Might work, you never know....
