I just downloaded Microsoft Software Inventory Analyzer
(MSIA) (MsiaSetup.exe) and when trying to install it,
Norton warned me that the program was attempting malicious
mischief and that I should cancel the script.

The program is asking to delete system files. Should I
allow it?

Assuming this is something you downloaded from Microsoft's website or
another equally reputable site, I would imagine such a deletion may be
internal to the program... or it may be trying to replace a system file with
a newer version. If this was sent to you via e-mail, or you downloaded it
from an unknown site, I would deny access.

Pat,
You should have disabled your virus scanning prior to running the install.
One of the oldest Windows installation caveats is to shut down any
unecessary applications or services prior to installation, most particularly
antivirus software (You'll still see the admonition to close down running
programs on *every* MS installation splash screen). Although things are
better behaved than 5-10 years ago, one can still blow an application
installation (and potentially the OS) by not following this caveat.

What you ran into was Norton identifying the script actions as activity not
associated with normal system operation. Since deleting system files is not
something that one would do in the course of ordinary system use, Norton
alerted you that an application (MsiaSetup.exe in this case) was attempting
to do something suspicious.

To get your install to run properly, shut down Norton (and anything else not
required for the system to function during the installation) and then run
the installation routine. This will apply not only to the Software Inventory
Analyzer, but to virtually any application you install. Once the
installation is complete, reenable your services (including Norton) and you
should be fine. If you are concerned that you may have been hit with a
virus/worm *during* the installation, it certainly should be fine to do a
manual scan of the system as a final step.

**Note: The above assumes (for all cases):
1) You know the source of the installation
2) You performed a virus scan on the downloaded files prior to running the
install.
