Is there any way that I, as owner/administrator, can make sure that no one
else can create a user name for themselves unless I allow it? If my kids get
on the computer when I have left it unlocked, they seem to be able to add
themselves as users and I don't want them using this computer. Is there any
solution?

it depends on your operating system. with win95/98/me there is no way to
stop them unless you use a bios password.

Easy answers...

1) lock computer

2) it's called "discipline". Negative consequences for doing something they
are not allowed to do. If you don't teach them, someone else will (with
consequences that are *much* more negative...).

Ima;
Make sure they do not have access to any account especially an account
with Administrator access.
All accounts need strong passwords, do not forget the hidden
Administrator found by going to Safe Mode:
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/private.htm

You need to control the kids more.
In business such tampering could easily get someone fired.
You need an appropriate punishment for tampering with the computer.

There is no security without physical security.
If you give them uncontrolled access, there is no way to prevent them
from getting on the computer so control of the kids is important.

I'm with Skorpion. The solution is not to leave it unlocked, and pick a
GOOD password for the account. Once they are in the box they will tinker.

There are many solutions, but the truth is, your kids know more about
computers than you. Because they had the power, they could have done any
number of things to compromise your system. There is no way to list all the
ways to plug the holes.

Your only option is to reinstall and properly secure the OS, then BIOS
protect the machine from booting to anything except the hard drive. The
kids having physical access tot he PC makes it very difficult to control.

I recommend you use syskey to move your system key to a floppy... the OS
won't boot without it. Just make sure to have a couple copies of the
floppy. If you lose it, there is no hope...

Also, try making an example of the next kid who disobeys you...

When I was young and stupid(er), I thought the same way...

Boy, did my parents teach me different when they got home and discovered my
transgression(s).

Still comes down to teaching character and enforcing discipline... Most
parents are just too lazy or afraid of confrontation to actually do that
anymore.

Actually I have 3 but they are all under 4 years old still so I haven't
had to deal with them doing what they are not supposed to much

Cheers.
