I have two computers both with XP and broadband with AVG antivirus.
I have just run an XR Repair to the operating system followed by
installation of SP1 then SP2.
I now need to download all other updates but AVG keeps saying my "Internet
connection has failed. Please check you connection settings" and yet I CAN
connect to other websites (so the actual internet connection is
established).

I have double-checked all my settings match those of my other computer, yet
AVG still fails to connect.
My other computer connects using AVG with no problems.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks, Chris

From my own experience I think that happens when the Grisoft server is too
busy. Try again after fifteen or twenty minutes or after a few hours.

Agreed. Oddly enough, I find that it sometimes help to have IE opened to a
Grisoft page before seeking updates. YMMV. (AVG's had some *serious* and
large updates this past week.)

Heh, I guess Grisoft is learning about the Addictive Update Model the hard
way. It costs a lot of money in bandwidth to support a scheduled DDoS
attack.

If you don't know what the addictive update model is, read this node on
everything2:
