Within this past week I have been getting a number of
popups for advertisements ("Evidence Eliminator, Privacy
update, etc..") even when I am not using IE and just the
desktop is displayed. What steps should I take to
eliminate these?

http://www.dougknox.com/ and download Disable Messenger or
http://grc.com/stm/shootthemessenger.htm and download Shoot The Messenger
and read about the Spam that comes in through it on W2k and WXP.

Do not confuse this with the MSN Messenger.

Stopping Messenger Service is just hiding your head in the sand to ignore
the problem. A firewall like ZoneAlarm or Kerio is needed to block the
open ports to the Internet.

You need a firewall like ZoneAlarm or Kerio. I like Kerio because it has a
lot of customizable function.

Evidence Eliminator is junk

Every day a message with the subject beginning "** READ THIS BEFORE
POSTING..." is posted here. It answers your question if you would only take
the time to look at it...

I am assuming he has a firewall but even if he does have one he still needs
to stop the Messenger Service. If a firewall is not configured correctly
you can still get the popups and sometimes you get them if it is configured
correctly. A firewall is not 100% effective. NO security is 100%
effective. IF you think it is, then you are hiding your head in the sand.
I have never been infected, have you?

Forgot to comment on this, they don't block the ports unless you tell them
to. They block the applications that use the ports if you tell them to or
they autoconfigure them. They cause the ports to run in stealth mode so
they can't be detected if you are surfing and hackers are trolling for
victims, if they are working correctly. They block the applications such as
hackers and "nuts" use to enter your computer. If they blocked the ports
you would not be able to do the things you are doing right now. Go to
www.grc.com and get your ports checked to see if they are stealth (unseen) ,
open (visible), or closed (refuse to accept connections but not BLOCKED)
which means how they appear to probes.

If you guyz talking about stoping the messager, thiz way works.
but what about the popup of the IE windows?
How can we stop that ?

When you stop the messenger service, it's ok for the pop up windows but not
works for the pop up IE windows .

They don't stop popups. Use a popup stopping utility like popkiller.

No, never!

The new Messenger Service spam is using port 1026. Stoping the Messenger
Service is one answer but some anti virus applications use this to send
alert messages upon detecting a virus. So if the popups are Messenger
Service spam then the firewall is not set up correctly or is no good.

Get a good HOSTS file.
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Use the Google Toolbar that has a great popup stopper.
