Like the title says iexplore still runs when it's shut down and seems to be
opening for popups. I'm trying to fix a system for a friend who is not a
computer person and who had so much garbage on her system it should be the
Guinness book of world records. It's 95% better. She is running Norton AV
and Zonealarm Basic. I installed Spybot S&D and Ad-aware. Did aggressive
scans and removed 1000's of things. BUT, this iexplore thing is weird. You
shut everything down......you still see occasional popups. If you go to the
task manager there is still an iexplore running. You shut it down and all
the popups go poof.....gone. This iexplore running in the background also
seems to sometimes interfere will running iexplore when you want it to.

Try CWShredder?
Also might want toolbar.google.com - and of course, Windows Update
You're a good friend. I hope you're being paid, even if it's in alcohol.

Hmmmph. It has been so long since I've had the attention of the better half
of the species; I'd settle for a Beef Stroganoff dinner, and a kiss and a
hug for dessert.

Already got all the Windows Updates and installed the Google Toolbar. I
should have mentioned that.

Oh, I also already disabled MS Messenger. See the problem. I've "checked all
the boxes" (so to speak) and she is still having this one problem.
I've never seen anything written about this. iexplore still running when it
shouldn't be. I showed her how to use the task manager to shut it down but
still.......?????????
Oh, I had also noticed the security settings in ie had been lowered. I
assume one of the things her system was infected with did that. I kicked
them back up.
I checked things out in task manager. There were 55 things running before.
There are only 35 now. Yes it's a lot faster. I checked out some of the
items she has running and they all """seem legit""". Or at least I couldn't
tell if some were not by doing a google search on them. I also played with
program settings in Zone Alarm. There were some things I didn't know what
they were. I told it to not allow access and so far it hasn't adversely
affected anything. She told me that whenever zone alarm asked she "always"
clicked yes (she didn't know any better).

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php is a searchable database of
programs that might be started at boot, use it to see what the 35
programs are.
