Open zip files?
Can I get a virus just by opening a .zip file, without opening any of the
files inside the zip file?

Access 2000 Multi User
I have Access 2000 running on a network with four
stations connected to the server, each station has a copy
of the software. When more than one user tries to access
the application we receive an error that says she/he
doesn't have exculsive rights. And when I look at the
directory and file at that time there is a 'lock' icon
on the file.
I looked at the individual security parameters by station,
but don't see anything that looks like it would prevent
access by all users in a multi-user enviorement.
Could this be at the server security level and the
individual stations problem?

Passfilt.dll on NT Server 4.0

Just read about the use of passfilt.dll to enforce users to use strong passwords. Does anyone know if we set our DC's to use this dll will it effect the users existing passwords or will it just take effect the next time the users are required to change their passwords??? Internet Explorer
Today I received a message from Internet Explorer(I have
received these before without a problem) in a blue box
which said that an error had been received and that the
computer had to be closed down. It then gave two boxes;
one said 'send error report' and the other said 'don't
send'. I then chose one of the boxes and closed down the
machine. I think that the error I made was to close down
the machine myself rather than let the software do it!
Anyway, I cannot get rid of this box and everytime I turn
the computer on and try and try and get on the internet
by using Internet Explorer the same message is received.
I have pressed the request boxes to both send and don't a
report and nothing changes. Will someone please tell me
what to do.
Many thanks. Tag: hotmail Tag: 44707
attempted-recon
Hello.
My firewall shows an intrusion called "attempted-recon", the reference URL is http://www.whitehats.com/info/IDS311 and a description
shows ICMP L3RetrieverPing.
What is an attempted-recon? What information gives me a refernce URL concerning firewalls and what is an ICMP L3RetrieverPing?

Architecture for multiple servers
Hi All,
I am about to upgrade our NT 4.0 servers with 2003 servers. I anticipate
that I will have either 3 or 4 servers operational. One will be for
Exchange, one for Oracle, one for Terminal Server connections, and a fourth
for File sharing and storage. I may be able to squeeze the file storage to
the Terminal Server, but not sure.
Anyway, our current architecture is:
public IP to Nortel Contivity box for VPN access
public IP to NIC1 in exchange server
private IP to NIC2 in exchange server
exchange server performing proxy et al to the local network
I would like to make this more secure. First, and foremost, I understand
that by default 2003 server IIS is MUCH better than 4.0 was. My question
is: should I have a hardware firewall put in place, and route the traffic
based on ports? Should I have 2 NICs in the new exchange server?
I want to do this one right, since I had no say in the original NT system we
are currently using.
Thanks for any input!

MSDN for sale ? Legal ?
I was kinda curious on one issue. I used to receive MSDN and of course loved
it.
I recently saw at a local used bookstore/software store where they had a
pretty up to date copy of MSDN complete with Three Binders of CD's and a
smaller binder of DVD's. All access codes were attached. The only problem
is, if this software has already been activated if its legal or not ?
Anyone know the answer on this one ?

Malicious Script HelpCtr.Exe
Running WinXP Home
I hope someone will bear with me and read this. It sounds complicated
I guess, but I have tried to pare it down to just a few words and that
just won't work. And if anyone has a better idea than reformatting and
reinstalling I would be SO grateful for the advice.
Problem began with a sudden drastic decline in dial-up connection
speed. Initially blamed my ISP, pretty much cursed them out over a
couple of day. (I have since apologized!)
After updating VirusScan and SpyBot, which I routinely do anyway, and
finding no problems there. I started the modem troubleshooter. Should
have begun there. Several pages into the troubleshooter I get a
Norton Warning Window that there is a Malicious Script HelpCtr.Exe and
recommends that I block it. It does not offer to quarantine it. I
delete it. It has no effect.
I have script blocking on as a default, but it appears not to have
caught this.
I do a search on the file name. I come up with 3 exact matches, and
one additional match with an extended string following the extension.
They are as follows:
helpctr.exe in C:\WINDOWD\$NtServicePackUninstall$ Aug/18/2001
helpctr.exe in C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles|i386 Aug/29/2002
helpctr.exe in C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\binaries Aug/29/2002
HELPCTR.EXE-0BD5B31B.pf in C:\WINDOWS\prefetch Current date
All capitals are exactly as shown in the search result window.
The first three files appear to be legitimate. Their age and the
properties screen which says Microsoft is the origin lead me to
believe they are legitimate.
So I assumed the last one, with the long string followed by .pf was
the culprit. So I deleted it. No effect. If I disconnect and
reconnect, it is at the same low speed, and the trouble shooter finds
the script again. Rebooting does the same thing. Went through this
several times. Same result (non-result?)
(I also deleted ALL of them at one time,I got warnings of possible
instability which I ignored, But doing so immediately affected
everything! From mouse clicks to keyboard function! So I restored them
and rebooted!)
Obviously (to me) something unknown is regenerating this file! It is
this I must find! Anyone having a clue what is causing this?
In the last 2 days some other odd things have occurred which I will
not detail here, but it leads me to logically assume that whatever is
invading my system has more nasty things to do than just slowing down
my internet connection.
I did a search on Google/groups and there are literally thousands of
entries dealing with problems with HelpCtr.exe, all of them seemingly
affecting a different aspect of Windows. Some can't print. some can't
network, and on and on.
Looked it up on Symantec's page, got three hits, none of which related
in any way to my situation.
(And Norton, BTW, no longer supports a TWO YEAR OLD version of
AntiVirus. And even if you qualify for support they do not offer
support to get rid of a problem. Only support is for installation and
general use of the program. Have used Norton for 10 years. Never
again. End of rant)
The basic support from Dell is to Back up data, reformat and re
install. I'm at the point that I might be willing to do it BUT here's
at least one problem with that: If something is generating this
malicious script how am I to determine what is safe to backup and what
is not. Just backing it all up does not make any sense to me.
I hope I have not lost your interest by going on too long and that all
of this makes some sense.
Hopefully

Client Certificates
Pardon my ignorance in the area of Certifiate Services. In the questions I
may have made incorrect statements. I would greately appreciate if you
could correct me.
I am generating client certificates using win2k3 Certificate Services.
After creating the certificate, I export it using public/private key pair
into .pfx. file. I then import it to client machine personal store. In the
personal node there are now 2 certificates. I am assuming it is a public
client certificate and public CA certificate.
Where does the private key get stored?
If it is stored in some hidden place, how can I check what private keys have
been imported to date? How can I delete them?
Is the private key the same for all certificate for that CA? or is there
different private key for each certificate for that CA?

Someone using my MSN ID and email ?
I cannot say for sure, but I usually get a good 30-40 emails per day with
about 5-8 being Spam, the others are alot of Microsoft newsletters and other
computer newsletters and then about 5 real emails. This number very rarely
varies more then just a few.
On a couple of times logging in over the last few weeks, I have gotten maybe
5 emails altogether and have had friends say they email me, but I never
received the email. This has never been a problem on MSN except years ago
when a "friend" found my login info and was diverting mail. I just changed
the password again, (last time that helped for about 10 days) and so
far....at least for the last few days I am back to receiving my normal
emails. However over the last week (before I changed the password again)
there was a very large drop in the emails that I received.
Is there anyway to get basically a "log on file" from MSN that would show
what IP's people used to logon to my account ? This would at least limit the
people that might have access to the email. Not sure if this is something
for Microsoft Privacy or Security or what. The general customer service just
give me thee pre-canned message to change your password often. The last
password I used was a long one (about 18 characters) and I do not know any
other way around this.
Any ideas out there as this is something I really do not like very much !
Thanks.

Auto login question
I have a Media Center PC set up on a home network with other XP Pro PCs. In
terms of sharing files and printers, I have found that I need to create
accounts with the identical names/passwords on each computer. I have also
found that using a blank password on both sides of connection doesn't seem
to allow sharing to work very well.
So, on my Media Center PC I need to create a password for the primary
account in order to be able to access the printer on another one of my PCs.
However, I do *not* want to have to type in a password every time I turn on
the TV a.k.a my Media Center PC. So is there a way to have an account with
a password but still get an automatic login? Or perhaps there is a way to
make the Windows networking or security not be so picky about blank
passwords?
