I have a Gateway computer with Windows ME operating
system. My question is how do I know if I have a firewall
installed on my computer?

Did you buy or install one?

Is one listed in C:\Program files?

Windows ME does not have a firewall.
Look in Start/Programs.
But if you do not know, the answer is most likely No.

There are many, some are free:

Windows ME doesn't come packaged with a firewall. I would
strongly urge you to get one on your own: having a
computer and going online without a firewall and an anti-
virus is computer suicide. A good spyware blocker is
strongly recommended, too. (While you most likely have no
spyware right now, a spyware scanner and remover might not
be a bad thing to get down the line, too.)

Along with all the other responses, I would recommend that you get the
latest version of Hijack This right now. Run it. Save the results to a file.
And run it again after you deliberately install any new software; save the
results to a file. This will give you an HJT baseline file to check against
in case you suspect some nefarious activity in a browser hijack. Any
difference between your uninfected baseline file and the file you generate
after a suspicious activity might point to the culprit.

Windows XP Pro/Home editions are the only OS that ship
with a firewall, which is called ICF (Internet Connection
Firewall). Unless you have specifically installed a
firewall, you don't have one.

I recommend either Zone Alarm or Sygates personal
firewalls. Both have free versions (links below) and
will alert you to unauthorized attempts to access your
machine both in and outbound (you'd be surprised how many
of your apps try to phone home).

If you've been using a broadband connection without any
type of firewall protection, I would also recommend
rebuilding your machine from scratch as it's probably
been compromised. If you can afford it, upgrade to
XP...it's a much better operating system.
