Windows XP Pro/Home editions are the only OS that ship
with a firewall, which is called ICF (Internet Connection
Firewall). Unless you have specifically installed a
firewall, you don't have one.
I recommend either Zone Alarm or Sygates personal
firewalls. Both have free versions (links below) and
will alert you to unauthorized attempts to access your
machine both in and outbound (you'd be surprised how many
of your apps try to phone home).
If you've been using a broadband connection without any
type of firewall protection, I would also recommend
rebuilding your machine from scratch as it's probably
been compromised. If you can afford it, upgrade to
XP...it's a much better operating system.
