IDS really isn't for beginners but we'll see.

SystemExperts - Technical tutorials:
http://www.systemexperts.com/tutorial.html

Specifically:

Practical Intrusion Detection Tips and
What Hackers Have Up Their Sleeves Now :
http://www.systemexperts.com/tutors/intrusionhackers.pdf

This is more like it:

SearchSecurity.com Tutorial Webcast: Advanced Intrusion Detection ...:
http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/content/0,290959,sid14_gci865094,00.html

You can watch the whole webcast if you'd like. There you can even ask
questions and they'll help you get your answers. Do keep in mind that the
page there is MUCH more than a guide for beginners.

Here's some general stuff:

Is there something SPECIFIC you want to know?

No problem and do remember that even IDS isn't a real solution compared to
effective policy and education. It's a tool, one of many, to make an admin's
job a little easier. It's a tool that, like any other, must be maintained
and must be given attention to. One must learn to use it, if it's in place
but not properly configured it does you nothing more than cost you money and
time while still leaving vulernabilities. IDS improperly configured is not
even really capable of being called a lock. Instead it's more like hoping
the burgler left you a note to show your insurance company so you can tell
them what was stolen more easily.
