I just purchased a new laptop bundled with xp-sp2, Norton AV (90 day), I
activated the Norton AV but disabled the Norton personal firewall, ran the
network wizard to configure the laptop wireless adaptor to one I installed in
my home pc, (xp-sp2, dial up), enabled file, print, ICS sharing, updated
Norton definitions and xp updates.

The problem is everytime I turn on the laptop the windows firewall is
disabled along with two of the three alert options located in the Security
Center. So I literally have to open the security Center Window to see that it
is off and then manually set it to on. I have to do this each time I restart.
I checked the services tab under computer management and the text says its on
auto, I also ran a scan with Norton and it came up clean. Anyone know how to
keep the windows firewall on as a default or is this a byproduct of having
Norton?

Hihar in Thanks,

This is, as you said, a byproduct of having Norton. Leave the Norton
firewall on as it is better than the Windows SP2 one. Leave the Windows
Firewall disabled. The Security Center alerts are disabled by Norton
also, since it is monitoring antivirus and firewall status for you.
Don't forget to either pay for Norton when the 90 days are up or get
another av. If you don't want Norton then, you can use the Windows
Firewall after you've uninstalled the Norton stuff.

I could do that but why doesnt norton alert me that I have turned of its
firewall after starting?
Since norton turns off the windows firewall and coresponding alerts (by
virtue of its activation) it would seem that norton would scream that no
firewall is on after startup....wouldnt it?

It seems like virus behavior to me.

So you are saying that you disabled the Norton Internet Worm Protection
but you now can't enable the Windows Firewall? Check with Symantec tech
support or get yourself a better antivirus that doesn't interfere with
what you want to do. It doesn't particularly sound to me like you have
a virus; it sounds like Norton is living up to its reputation of being
a really sucky program.

Firstly let me apoligize about cross posting, I was a little confused
initially on where to post. Essentialy my point is this:

If I restart the laptop something shuts off the Windows Fire wall and
disable xp's security center alert notifications.
I can manualy turn on the windows firewall but it will not stay on after the
next reboot.
Therefore if I do not enable the Norton Personal Firewall feature I
essentially have no protection but more importan neither Norton or Windows
displays any kind of notice to that effect.
Of course if I turn on The Norton Personal Firewall option then I have a
firewall but as we all know at somewhat of a price resource wise.
I will look around I heard AVG is pretty good. Thanks for all your advice
and knowledge.

If I enable Nortons personal firewall option then that becomes the default
firewall
is off either because Nortons configuration or

Norton had already left up its reputation. :) <<personal opinion>>

Visit http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/downloads/default.mspx
This is Microsoft web-site where you can download free or shareware (trial)
security software. All these products are recommeded by Microsoft .
Download Panda or McAfee product ,free 90 day trial. They are good.

And remember that if you want NOT TO HAVE problems with firewall,
DO NOT
install other product firewall, just disable the firewall during install
process.
For example ,I use Panda and while installing it I didn't make a tick on
Panda's firewall protection,so Panda's firewall is not installed and it
cannot make WSC problems.

Also download SpyBot S&D and/or Lavasoft Ad-Aware >They are antispyware and
antijunk products ,available free.

Also visit http://www.microsoft.com/security/partners/antivirus.asp
This site shows all Microsof Antivirus Partners.
Visit some sites, download and install some products and then only if you
want buy/purchase a product .
Kaspersky, Panda, McAfee ,F-prot(frisk) are good products.

Have you done any scanning with other antimalware programs? If not, do
so and this will answer the question of whether your machine is
infested with something. Here are some general malware removal steps.
Do everything with updated tools in Safe Mode:
