Hello

I have turned on the XP internal firewall .. Trying to end the internet explorer pop ups that are plaguing me. I have reg edit closed that port that is supposed to let them thru and they still come thru at a rate of one every 3 min while I surf the web - even with my XP firewall turned on ... SO .. .I downloaded the Free version of Sygate firewall .. in hopes that it will be more aggressive at stopping the pop ups ...

BUT ... Can I run both firewalls ? or should I disable the XP internal one NOW ?

Any Advice will be welcome ...

This is my first attempt at running a firewall of any kind and I am really just learning at what all the warning messages mean ...

Hi

A firewall will never stop pop-ups from Internet Explorer. You will
need a dedicated pop-up stopper product that integrated with IE to
be able to do that.

Firewalls are not good at stopping pop-ups.

To stop popups, install a pop-stopper. Google and Yahoo have one associated
with their toolbar. Also there are quite a few good ones on the market.

After installation of the pop stopper, install and run adaware and/or Spybot
S&D to remove any adware or spyware form your PC that was installed by any
website or software. Some of these spyware are also responsible for pop-ups.

Firewalls are useless against popups (though some software combines popup
blocking with a firewall, the popup blocker is a separate feature from the
firewall). Just by letting MSIE access the Internet, you let popups in,
because popups use MSIE to get in.

There are several approaches to take. Make sure you have the latest version
of MSIE 6, and then check the security and privacy options. You should be
able to exert control on popups with this version of MSIE 6. Or, use another
browser. Mozilla and Opera were giving their users fine control over cookies
and popups before MSIE decided to follow suit. There are also third party
applications, and the hosts file.

And don't run two firewalls on the same machine. They usually don't tango
well together. If you are going to use Sygate, learn how to do it well, and
turn off ICF.
