When I put up my firewall on the Dell that is the network
hub for three computers, I loose the network - I have to
disconnect the firewall and restart the computer in order
to use the network. I do have a firewall in my netgear
box - does this suffice? If not, could someone tell me
what to do to use my Dell firewall and still have a
network?

Thank you

The perimeter firewall [your Netgear] will probably suffice and at least protect
from uninitiated inbound traffic which is by far the biggest threat if it is in
a default configuration. A firewall of course is just one part of protecting
your network. You should still be able to use your personal firewall if you want
which can provide additional protection by controlling outbound access even
mapping to specific applications. It should have a configuration to allow
traffic to and from "trusted" networks in a setting. The trusted network would
be your lan network address as seen in ipconfig /all on your computer and most
likely the first three octets of your IP address as in 192.168.1.xxx as an
example. Your subnet mask [if all .255] will tell you what part of your IP
address is the network address. If it is 255.255.255.0 then the first three
parts of your IP address is the network address. --- Steve

also what type of firewall is it? is it the windows icf
firewall or a 3rd party firewall(like zonealarm)? the
windows firewall will block the network.
