Win2000 sp4 fully patched. No viruses.

My IE6 favorites has disappeared.
I usually work as a Power User account, but occasionally work as
administrator.
Today, I was using IE as administrator, and in fact I "Run As" IE as
my Power User account but logged in as admin. Then when I logged back in
as Power User, my Favorites were gone (except for an empty Links folder).
I think this might be a DACL which was set as administrator, preventing me
from seeing my Favorites as a PowerUser.

Where is the Favorites folder for various IE user accounts?
Any other ideas about what might have happened?

Thanks,
- Mitch

Hi Mitch. They are stored in each users profile documents and
settings/username/favorites. I don't think it is hidden by default. In XP the folder
shows as a star? I don't know the reason for that. Each user has his own list of
favorites, if you logon with a different account the list will be different, but
something should be there. I back mine up every now and then by exporting it to a
file. I hope you find yours - I would be lost without mine. --- Steve

Steve,
I can see that folder, and all the content is there, but the mapping
to my Favorites location is wrong:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
and the Favorites names value shows C:\winnt\Favorites but
should obviously be C:\Documents and Settings\<myuserid>\Favorites.

I tried changing that registry setting, but when I log out and back in, it
reverts to the old (incorrect) setting!

Thanks,
- Mitch

Assuming you are using W2K or XP they should be in the documents and
settings/user folder [I sometimes forget this is not a W2K group]. I am
running W2003 right now and on my computer that registry key points to
\documents and setings\user\favorites. You might want to run SpyBot S&D on
your machine to see if some junkware is causing the problem. Try creating a
new user to see if favorites work right for that user. At least your
favorites still exist in which case you could copy them over using Explorer
if you have too. If you are running XP, you may be able to use a restore
point to get things working right. It save by butt on the family computer
once where the "students" in the family do their stuff. -- Steve

I am also wondering if it would help to delete that registry key and then
recreate it? --- Steve

Doesn't work. W2k.
Setting keeps reverting back to C:\Winnt\Favorites.

Hi Mitch. Did you check the HKEY_USERS\.default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current
Version\Explorer\User Shell folders ? On my machine the value data for history is
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\History. Other than that I am about out of ideas. ---
