I was just about to register for a Verisign Digital ID, when I came across messages in various newsgroups, where it was claimed that enrolling for a Verisign Digital IDs results in massive amounts of spam, not just from external spammers, but also from Verisign and it's associated / partner companies. This is something that I want to avoid like the plague. I suffered terribly from spamming with my old e-mail address, and I certainly do not want a repeat of that problem.     - Cannot Acces File, Do nott have permission... My computer runs on Windows XP Prof, and Protoride.worm came in. It travelled across my home network and infected another computer on XP Home and one on Win98 2nd Ed. The Win98 one seems to be ok now after getting rid of the worm. I need hel[p with the XP Prof one. I cannot access any applications from the desktop and from the menu. I get this error message saying I do not have permission. Norton Systemworks could not delete the file msupdate.exe from the start menu and could not repair or quarantine the worm either.     - Dialer infected media player Hi, About a week ago I became aware of a dialer trying to dial out every time I try to use the media player. "Zone Alarm" flags it "This program (i.e WMP)has changed..." but clicking "no" when asked if I want it to access doesn't prevent it trying to dial out. The dialer appears on my dial-up propeties as "Axis" and in the WMP program file an "application file" "wmplayer" says it was created on the 14th. The digital signature says "click to enter ltd".     - security logging in guest account my guest account on windows xp prof. has some kind of problem. on logging into guest account , a message pops saying " Security Logging on this system is full. Only the Administrator can fix it. " on clicking "ok" it comes back to the startup screen. so, its like i am not able to login into the guest account. I checked the security logging options when the ICF is turned on and i found that the log file was not enabled. So there is no chance that the log file has exceeded its limit. As Administrator I have configured Automatic Update to "Download the updates automatically and notify me when they are ready to be installed" on each of the PC's assuming that this would work, irrelevant of the current user logged on.     - DCOM access try after connecting the internet Hi All, since days, I am seeing the following event listed in my eventviewer: Access denied attempting to launch a DCOM Server. The server is: {00020906-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} The user is Unavailable/Unavailable, SID=Unavailable. This happens always shortly after I establish a connection to the internet. Anyway, which programs I have open. I tried to open nothing else than the computermanagement [just to see/wait for the event]. It comes always. I created a new useraccount, just to be sure, that this does not depend on settings in the profile. Result:It happens with each user, even new ones. A full virus-scan gave no results. Spybot found no problems. BTW, the mentioned DCOM server is MS Word. The event happens nearly each minute and floods my eventlog. But I am afraid, that there can be more problems. I do not know, how to anaylze the cause. Could someone please help? I use Windows 2000 Server, english, SP4, all securityfixes, McAfee netshield with latest engine and signature files. MS Office and the Net Development is also installed, as SQL Server and Webserver. Everything patched fine.     - My modem is getting hijacked Im running Windows XP and IE6.0 - and Im usually behind tight firewalls - now I surfed "outside" the wall and somehow - someone tries to hijack my modem. You could encrypt a drive/partition with EFS if you have XP Pro. However you can not
encrypt the whole system drive that includes the operating system files and user
profiles. be very careful with EFS or any encryption because you can lose access to
your files without backups of your encryption private keys. Se the link below for
best practices on EFS. Using ntfs permissions with each user having their own user
account is the usually way to control access to folders/files/applications. ---
