I have been recently receiving empty spam messages. There
is nothing in From, To, and Subject lines, and the body is
empty as well. I can see the return path, etc, under
Options, but they do not reveal anything interesting.

I am puzzled: Does anybody know what is the purpose of
these messages? Is it just checking if my address is
valid? Also, any hints on how to set my spam filtering to
get rid of them (I use Outlook 2003 built in filtering and
I just love it).

Thank you

Well let me hazard a guess why the spammers are doing this.

Have you ver heard of children going out in the wee hours in the morning =
overturning mailboxes and letting the dog out? So we might ask, "why =
did they do that? What purpose did it serve?"

Basically the answer to this is that crimnals start out small and work =
themselves up to more exciting crimes like treason and murder. But they =
got to start somewhere right?

Actually I'm just fooling around. But the answer I believe is, "Because =
they can." It is likly a result of a misconfigured spam machine. So =
they are going to do it until they get it right. So don't be too =
disappointed by the empty messages you'll get bona fide spam in a little =
bit. Promise.

Finally there WAS a very easy way to get these empty messages sent to =
the delete folder. Basically you use VBA and test the "length" of =
received mailitems. If Len(mailitem) =3D 0 delete. See ez as pie. =
Unfortunately due to the infinite wisdom of Microsoft Corporation and =
spammers\virus writers to make sure you have a happy day, the ability to =
do this with VBA in Outlook 2003 has been squelched. Oh well.

Somewhere, there is a spammer who isn't too bright at writing code, and has
let loose a new spam programming without testing it first to see if it
actually works. Maybe this is a good thing. [Note - if spammers were good
programmers, they'd be programming for their money, not lying, cheating and
generally abusing the network.]

How about posting the headers of a few of these messages? Right-click the
message and select "Options" to see the headers.
