Network Trouble
Ive been using Windows Media Encoder 7 with no real
problems until we installed a local network in our house.
My computer runs off an internet connection which i access
through the network. Now when i try to broadcast through
media encoder 7...only people on the network can access it
through windows media player? How can I sort this out?

Client Certificates
Pardon my ignorance in the area of Certifiate Services. In the questions I
may have made incorrect statements. I would greately appreciate if you
could correct me.
I am generating client certificates using win2k3 Certificate Services.
After creating the certificate, I export it using public/private key pair
into .pfx. file. I then import it to client machine personal store. In the
personal node there are now 2 certificates. I am assuming it is a public
client certificate and public CA certificate.
Where does the private key get stored?
If it is stored in some hidden place, how can I check what private keys have
been imported to date? How can I delete them?
Is the private key the same for all certificate for that CA? or is there
different private key for each certificate for that CA?

VIRUS REMOVAL

Someone using my MSN ID and email ?
I cannot say for sure, but I usually get a good 30-40 emails per day with
about 5-8 being Spam, the others are alot of Microsoft newsletters and other
computer newsletters and then about 5 real emails. This number very rarely
varies more then just a few.
On a couple of times logging in over the last few weeks, I have gotten maybe
5 emails altogether and have had friends say they email me, but I never
received the email. This has never been a problem on MSN except years ago
when a "friend" found my login info and was diverting mail. I just changed
the password again, (last time that helped for about 10 days) and so
far....at least for the last few days I am back to receiving my normal
emails. However over the last week (before I changed the password again)
there was a very large drop in the emails that I received.
Is there anyway to get basically a "log on file" from MSN that would show
what IP's people used to logon to my account ? This would at least limit the
people that might have access to the email. Not sure if this is something
for Microsoft Privacy or Security or what. The general customer service just
give me thee pre-canned message to change your password often. The last
password I used was a long one (about 18 characters) and I do not know any
other way around this.
Any ideas out there as this is something I really do not like very much !
Thanks.

In SpywareBlaster, I click Tools ; CustomBlocking ;

Auto login question
I have a Media Center PC set up on a home network with other XP Pro PCs. In
terms of sharing files and printers, I have found that I need to create
accounts with the identical names/passwords on each computer. I have also
found that using a blank password on both sides of connection doesn't seem
to allow sharing to work very well.
So, on my Media Center PC I need to create a password for the primary
account in order to be able to access the printer on another one of my PCs.
However, I do *not* want to have to type in a password every time I turn on
the TV a.k.a my Media Center PC. So is there a way to have an account with
a password but still get an automatic login? Or perhaps there is a way to
make the Windows networking or security not be so picky about blank
passwords?

MicroMonopoly aids Terrorism?

BillGates v. GeneralMotors
For all of us who feel only the deepest love and
affection for the way computers have enhanced our lives,
read on. At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates
reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto
industry and stated, "If GM had kept up with technology
like the computer industry has, we would all be driving
$25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon".
In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a
press release stating: If GM had developed technology
like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the
following characteristics: (and I just love this
part)
1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a
day.
2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you
would have to buy a new car.
3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no
reason. You would have to pull over to the side of the
road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart
it, and reopen the windows before you could continue. For
some reason you would simply accept this.
4. Occasionally, executing a manoeuvre such as a left
turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to
restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the
engine.
5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the
sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy
to drive - but would run on only five percent of the
roads.
6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning
lights would all be replaced by a single "This Car Has
Performed An Illegal Operation" warning light.
7. The airbag system would ask "Are you sure?" before
deploying.
8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would
lock you out and refuse to let you in until you
simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and
grabbed hold of the radio antenna.
9. Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would
have to learn how to drive all over again because none of
the controls would operate in the same manner as the old
car.
10. You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the
engine off.
Please share this with your friends who love, but
sometimes hate their computer! Tag: email notes Tag: 44451

Win2k3 Web Edition, where is the protection?
<rant
I'm really irritated at Microsoft for not caring about security. Didn't Nimda, CodeRed, Blaster, etc. tell them anything yet
How on earth can they not ship a simple statefull packet firewall with the 'Web Edition' version, like they do with WinXP and the other 2k3 server editions
</rant
Which brings me to the following question. Since IPSec is now the only other way for me to secure the box, how on earth does one define an IP range instead of single IPs. I want to limit access to TCP port 3389 for Remote Desktop to a dynamic IP range that my ISP carries. I got no trouble setting this up with IPsec, but the GUI doesn't allow for an IP range, only one IP at a time, and I refuse to create 5 * 255 entries to cover the dynamic spread of IPs my cable modem might end up with. Problem setting a SecurityDescriptor using ADSI
Hello,
I have just run into an interesting problem when setting a Security
Decriptor on an NTFS file. I get the following error:
Run-time error '-2147023589 (8007051b)':
Automation Error
This security ID may not be assigned as the owner of this object.
I am logged in as the Domain Administrator, and I haven't tried to change
the ownership, I've simply added an ACE and tried to save the DACL with the
same (untouched) SecurityDescriptor
(i.e. objSecurity.SetSecurityDescriptor "D:\SecTest", ADS_PATH_FILE,
objSecDesc, ADS_SD_FORMAT_IID )
I was trying to add code to change the owner programmatically, so I went and
"manually" set the owner to another (non-admin) account to see if I could
pick up the change of ownership in my code, and then discovered that while
the owner was set to the non-admin account, I would get this error message
whenever I tried to write the SD, even though that account is already the
owner, and I'm not trying to change the ownership, just the DACL!
I would really appreciate any help you could give me... I obviously can't
deploy the component if it blows up when a different owner is set on file...
Thanks in Advance!

I am trying to secure my database and was told to do this:
Open your remote web in FrontPage by selecting File|Open
Web, then entering the URL to your web, ie :
http://www.myliveweb.com. Once the web is open, right-
click on the fpdb folder and select Properties. Under
Properties, uncheck the option for "Allow files to be
browsed". Click Apply, then OK.
But the "Allow files to be browsed" box is not there.
I remember about a month ago it was there and the admin
guy said that the only thing they changed was to upgrade
to "Active Directory Domain" on that server.

Recombining a server certificate and private key
This was previously posted to
microsoft.public.inetserver.iis.security, but perhaps that group is
too specific, as no-one could suggest a solution. It's really a
question about handling certificates and private keys.
---------------------------------
W2k Server, IIS5
We have a 3-year server certificate for SSL, which we've used for
about a year. When our hard drive failed recently, our disaster
recovery script worked fine, except that we haven't been able to
re-install the certificate with its private key.
We backed up the CSR and private key before we ordered the
certificate, because we found (when testing with a trial certificate)
that, once the certificate is installed (the pending request
satisfied), the private key is no longer available for export. (This
appears to be confirmed at
http://www.ebizid.com/support/faq_iis5.html) . We backed up the
certificate as soon as it was received from the CA.
But this means we now have a .CRT file from the CA and a separate .PFX
file containing the CSR and private key. As I understand it, we need
to import from a single .PFX file that contains both the certificate
and the key.
Can I use OPENSSL (or something else) to create the combined "server
certificate and private key" file I need? So far, all I've achieved
is to use OPENSSL to extract the private key from the first file.
