From the microsoft internet explorer download page, I
updated whatever needed to be updated, according to the
check the website made on my computer. Can anyone please
tell me why I now have 14 infected files, with the
backdoor.coreflood virus and the download.trojan virus
(according to norton antivirus). I cannot quarantine them,
I cannot delete them, I cannot compress the folders they
are in......so I have no idea what to do. Furthermore, I
find it impossible to email microsoft directly...they seem
to be sending me around in circles to come to pages like
this one, so any advice given as to what to do, will be
greatly appreciated.

Patches and updates are only as secure as the computer
operator
allows them to be. Do you run a firewall? Do you use
IRC? Instant
Messenging programs? Do you swap pics back and forth in
these
programs with people? View webcams within these
programs?
Allow these programs to "act as a server" thru your
firewall? Whenever
you do things like that you allow a way for trojans and
worms to enter.
I think there is more risk of getting something rotten
through open ports
than email. We have become very "email" aware but
forget there is
more than one way for viruses to enter our machines.

The Cleaner from www.moosoft.com is a nice little
trojan detector/remover
utility. Keep your virus software running at all times
and updated daily, do a
full scan daily. Keep the firewall under strict
control.

>Thank you for the help Ozgirl. Am downloading the cleaner
now. Yes I do use instant messengers but don't really swap
pictures on them. The folders where I found the viruses
are compressed , were dated yesterday when I downloaded
stuff from the msn website, and cant do much with them at
the moment. If I can't figure it out after the cleaner is
downloaded, I will have to go to the professionals.

This may be a bit late, but you can go to Microsoft for free, if the problem
is strictly related to viruses or to security-related patches.

Call 1-866-PCSAFETY. If your copy of Windows is an OEM copy, they may
choose at some point to involve the OEM, at their discretion, but they are
supposed to take calls from anyone with Windows and a virus or
security-patch related question. I'm not sure about win95--I suspect not!
