Pop-ups after downloading Microsoft's recommended updates
Recently I downloaded some of Microsoft's recommended
updates that were suppose to provide more security.
During the download I began to receive pop up messages
with phone numbers and web address that I could contanct
to get rid of the messages that I am now receiving.
Ever since downloading the Microsoft updates I have
continued to receive the popups. I already have Firewall
software that I purchased to prevent popups, and this is
the first time I had problems like this.
Does anyone konw if there is a security flaw in some of

I've started recieving a microsoft outlook message on my
screen that says because of current security settings
regarding an actveX setting, the web page may not load
properly. I haven't changed any settings. What can I do

The Dell computer I purchased has installed McAfee
security. I don't want to pay more for this service.
I am so tired of its continuous pop up while on the net I
am ready to delete the entire software.

Encryption gone after installing MSIE update
I am using Internet Explorer and Windows 98. I got the
usual Microsoft Update screen, yesterday, telling me there
was a critical update available for my IE. Dont remember
what version I was using, but I upgraded to version 6.
Now, the cipher is set to 0-bit. I used to be able to pay
my credit card online (which I believe requires 128-bit
encryption), but I can no longer access that screen
because of security reasons. How do I change the cipher or
whatever it is I need to change to get back to the

Email claiming to be from Microsoft
Just wanted to mention an email I received, claiming:
"Microsoft User this is the latest version of security
update, the "July 2003, Cumulative Patch" update which
eliminates all known security vulnerabilities affecting
Internet Explorer, Outlook and Outlook Express as well as
five newly discovered vulnerabilities. Install now to
protect your computer from these vulnerabilities, the most
serious of which could allow an attacker to run executable
on your system. This update includes the functionality of
all previously released patches."
It has an attached .exe file, which I'm sure is *not* what
it claims to be. Just wanted to give a heads up since no
doubt there are many users out there who don't know enough
to avoid it.

PLease Help ME!
Here is my problem. I have a 2 month old computer and had
to bring it into the shop for 3 times because of hackers
getting into my system installing spyware and trojan
horses! I also purchased The Norton Security and they
still are finding away in my computer! And I goto the
Windows Update page and I am installing the updates that
I need for Windows XP and the installation process stops!
What can I do to keep hackers out for good? Please help
me! And why isnt the Windows Update thing working? Are

Priority written CD
I backed up the hard drive to my previous computer to
CD. This was done in an XP environment, therefore I
believe it was protected to only be read by that computer.
Now that I have my new laptop, I can only detect that the
storage space is being used, but cannot see the files.

Can't access encrypted sites
When my computer turns on there is a McAfee password for
which there is no acceptable password (blank doesn't work
either). It is my speculation that this is the reason I

Getting certificate context properties
Hi all,
I am developing a small app in C++ and I need to list all the certificates
in the system store, in a List View, like the one displayed in the
CryptUIDlgSelectCertificateFromStore() dialog. I have successfully
enumerated all the certificates using CertEnumCertificatesInStore() but I
can't seem to extract all the bits of information from the certificate
context, i.e. Issued to, Issued by, Intended purposes, Friendly name,
Expiration date and Location. The only pieces of information I have been
able to get so far using CertGetCertificateContextProperty() and
CertGetNameString() is the Issued to, Issued by and Friendly name.
Can anyone tell me how to get the remaining properties?

NT Kernel trying to access net
My firewall keeps telling me that "NT Kernel system may
have changed since the last time you opened it. Do you
want to allow it to access the internet?" And then when I
backtrace it, I get this IANA place, the Internet
Assigned Numbers Authority, who are these people and why
is my computer trying to send them something? Is this a
virus? Should I let it connect? Is it just trying to get

I have been illegally networked for over a year. Got a
new computer 2 months ago with HP home. This person (I
know the identity) has worked around firewalls, Mcafee,
Zone Alarm, you name it. Ive wiped the drives 3 times
but persistent information is being stored in C;, D; S;

Password protection on startup
Am trying to set up a computer with Windows ME. I want to
password the startup so that no one else can start it
without my OK. Am getting the request for password box
and when I put correct password in it its OK. If I put
the wrong password in it tells me so and aske for the
corect one. However if I click on the cancel button then
everything is bypassed and the computer starts yp.

NT server share ownership and permissions
When an NT server share was set up, the group 'Everyone'
owned the share.
Hi All,
The share has subdirectories that are not permissioned to
the group 'Everyone'.
Does this mean that if a user in the group 'Everyone'
wants to change permissions on the sub-directories they
have no permissions over they have to take-ownership
individually (e.g. Owner = 'SheildD')?
or
Can the user change file and subdirectory permissions
anyway because they are the owner of the share by being
part of the group 'Everyone'?

Logging-on to WinNT domain after hard disk change
We're using Ghost images in our lab for backing up the
systems. After I pull out the HD from its drawer, I do not
succeed logging on to our NT domain again, and I have to
disconnect and then re-connect to the domain using local
administrator. While we're doing this process so many
times a day I find this very disturbing.
Therefore, I'd like to hear from you whether there's a

Internet Toolbar icons
Recently, we noticed the appearance of an icon on our
MSN.com home page. The icon is named "Hot Sex." We have
no idea where or how this icon got on our toolbar. We are
not techies, but I was able to delete the icon by going
into View then Toolbars and Customize. However, the icon
is still in the "Available Tool Bar buttons." How do I

Pop-Up Windows
How does one get rid of pop ups. I get a lot of dating
service, sex, reducing and loan pop ups. It is most
annoying when I am in the middle of a letter or game and
one of these windows over rides whatever is on the
screen.It is also embarrassing to return to my computer
several hours later and find a sex ad in the middle of my
screen. I've been able to use the "My
Computer...Add/Remove programs" on a couple. But, most of
these new pop ups don't appear on the add/delete program
screen (at least not in any form I can recognize) so I
can't remove them. Where can they be found, haw are they
recognizable from regular program items (ie. do they have
a peculiar file extension etc.) and how do I get rid of
them. If there is no easy way, is there a program that

Export cert to pkcs12 format
i was able to export from IE way back i october in this
format. now when i look at the options, it is not
available as a selection in the export wizard. the
certificate i am attempting to export is the same one.
the only changes would have bee hotfixes and xp sp's.
i am running ie 6.x with xp pro current patches.

Just got on my computer, and when I try to access internet
options, I get a message saying that access is not allowed
and that I should contact my system administrator (me!)
I can only assume that someone is messing with me.

strange error
We have about 5 NT machines that have been acting very
strangly over the last few months. It started with one
and seemed to "spread" to the others over a few weeks. I
was checking the Event log on 2 of them, and they both
have the same error several times in the same day, It read
The browser has received an illegal datagram from the
remote computer QA771C to name OUR_COMPUTER on transport
Nwlnk. The data is the datagram.
I replaced our computers name for security reasons. The
remote computer had many different names, I counted 9, and
it looks to be something like a port scan or something
like that, because I have gotten this error over 50 times

Un-erasable addresses
I have the habit of hopping fron one page to another
without sometimes paying attention. A few times I ended

Access 2000
I will TRY to make this as short as possible.
I needed to get a very large(350 meg) MS Access DB from
one place to another, which means from moving it from one
LAN to another. After receiving the DB via CD, quite a few
of the objects(macros, forms, etc..) aren't there. Is this
due to the DB have security applied to it ?
I also had the security files copied to the CD as well. Is
there a way to reconnect the security ? Will this help out
the situation at all ? Any other suggestions ?
