I went to Microsoft System Manager, Internet Message
Format, Default, properties, message format is MIME. Do I
need a digital ID and how do I obtain one?

In order to get a digital ID (or a certificate), you need
to log on to one of the availabe certification authorities
(CA) and obtain one.

You do not _need_ a digital ID to use the MIME format, which is just used
automatically and transparently for you.

However, if you want to user Secure MIME to either encrypt or sign your
messages, you would need a digital ID or X.509 cert. A common place to get
one of these is www.verisign.com. If you have access to Windows Server
2003, it has a built-in certificate authority capabilities that you can use.
