A person can watch another persons computer monitor through the internet.
They can also track another persons events by remote. What countermeasures
are available? I have a spyware removal program and can install a firewall.
What else?

Anti-virus software that is configured to update itself every week or so
automatically. www.grisoft.com is free anti-virus.

www.kerio.com, www.zonealarm.com and www.sygate.com are free firewall
software.

And, make sure you're fully patched by going to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com every month or so, or enable the Automatic
Updates service under start, settings, control panel in Windows 2000, XP, ME
and 2003. For Windows XP, install XP Service Pack 2 via the same methods or
by manual download.

You could also run MBSA to look for several of the most common security
problems and missing patches. Free from www.microsoft.com/mbsa

That usually is sufficient. More things you can consider doing are here:

There are countless ways to do what you're talking about and in general
terms, Karl's advice is right on the money for locking down a machine in
general.

If you've got a specific issue with someone attacking your machine right now
then you need to try and find out a bit more about what ways they are
attacking you and use more targetted methods to directly address whatever
gap in your security they are exploiting.

That is fantasy, unless you enable Remote Desktop, PC Anywhere or VNC and
give the remote person credentials and then..... expose the machine directly
to the Internet. Contrary to Hollywood, the "Star Trek" world has not
arrived just yet

Define "track a person's events".

It is just common sense stuff.

1. Keep Internet Explorer's security settings at the maximum level, place
the URL of sites you trust into the "Trusted Zone".
2. Have good AV software installed
4. Install anti-spyware tools installed that both remove it and also help
prevent it
5. Install some type of firewall. It could be software on the machine or it
could be a hardware device such as a Cable/ DSL NAT Device (commonly &
incorrectly called a "router"). You can use a combination of both.

...only under the proper conditions,...that shouldn't be there in the first
place,...I think we need to be careful about "fear-mongering" and not to
feed the paranoia. Even under the conditions that it can be done I would
never describe the number of ways as being "countless".

There are plenty of posts in the newsgroup of people under the right
conditions, with the right software products, with the right authority to do
it legitamently,.....and they still have trouble making it work properly and
dependably,....let alone trying to do it without the right conditions, with
questionable products, without the right authority, all remotely, without
the owner wanting you to do it.

I'd need more info to address specific concerns, but I will say that the
Internet is a "public" resource. Therefore, the supposition of anonymity is
not realistic. I've seen most references to "privacy" as really meaning
anonymity.

As to the remove control/eavesdropping, in every case, it requires software
to be installed and configured on your machine. There are known exploits
that can drop trojans and the like on your machine, but in most cases, it's
simple code-execution of a user with privileged (i.e., admin) access on a
host.

Proper forensic analysis would involve isolating the host, and observing the
behaviors of the host to effectively rule in or rule out various scenarios
and root-cause items.

Well,
From what your saying it cannot just be done out of
nowhere. If you have downloaded a backdoor however it will
allow someone remote access to your computer, view webcams
connected to your computer, see what sites you go to
through your browsing history, and take desktop shots of
your computer.

That's why it is important to make sure you scan all your
files with a/v software, have a firewall enabeled before
you really connect to the internet (best protection), and
update your windows for the latest security patches.
