To assure a clean install, your anti-virus application should be disabled
and all other running processes closed before installing anything, including
Windows Updates.

You may have a "dirty" install of IE6 SP1. Try an overinstall*:

First, close *everything* via CTRL+ALT+DEL except Windows Explorer (includes
your AV program, Scheduled Tasks, Screensaver, and going offline).
Start>Run>IE6Setup.exe. Select Minimal - Custom; Select all the parts you
use, including OE (but none you didn't originally download) and overinstall.
Should take about 2 minutes. Reboot the computer.

Now, with AV and all other running processes still closed, check in at
Windows Update for additional updates and patches you may need.

*Win98 only. Users of other OSS should *not* attempt an overinstall of IE6.

You asked, I answered. If you feel another forum better suits your needs,
post there instead.

The error points to a problem with both your install of IE6 and your
Operating System. As you're not able to overinstall and since you can't use
Repair, your best bet would be to (1) uninstall the problem IE6, (2)
reinstall Win98 and then (3) upgrade to IE6 SP1 again.

You could also download the critical updates (e.g., from Windows Update
Catalog) using Firefox and then install them manually.

Have a very nice day, Flaky.
