You are seeing modem activity when you are not exchanging packets with the
Internet? Make sure your anti viruses program is up to date. Get yourself
AdAware, Spybot S&D, and a good Trojan hunter/killer. Set them up and run
checks. The worst case scenario is that you have a Trojan aboard, and
somebody may have logged your keystrokes. You may have a spammer Trojan, or
you may have a mass mailer worm.
Get the virus scan done first. Clean up any infection that is found. Run the
Trojan hunter/killer, and clean up, if necessary. Run AdAware and Spybot
S&D; more clean up, if necessary. Get your system patched up to current
levels, and learn how to secure MSIE to the max; uses the security zones,
tighten down permissions in the Internet zone, move sites you really trust
(like Windows Update) to the Trusted sites zone, with looser permissions.
That sort of thing.
