If you get the request for password before the computer even boots an
operating system, this is a BIOS password. There may be jumpers on the
motherboard or you can remove the motherboard battery. I'm assuming
this is a desktop computer and not a laptop. The motherboard battery is
a small coin-shaped battery that can be removed. Let the computer sit
overnight with the battery removed. In the morning, put the battery
back in and the BIOS will have been reset to defaults (no password).

OTOH, these BIOS passwords don't magically get set by themselves. Since
you apparently didn't set it, perhaps asking the person who did is your
best course of action.

Not necessarily.

It could be a *system* password, on a desktop, or a *hard drive*
password, on a laptop.

Both of which are set in the BIOS.
