Use a real firewall and block the outgoing...

I have compiled a list with links of some of the better known firewalls
you can choose from:

ZoneAlarm (Free and up)
http://snipurl.com/6ohg

Kerio Personal Firewall (KPF) (Free and up)
http://www.kerio.com/kpf_download.html

Outpost Firewall from Agnitum (Free and up)

Sygate Personal Firewall (Free and up)

Symantec's Norton Personal Firewall (~$25 and up)

BlackICE PC Protection ($39.95 and up)

The first thing you can do is update your mail client. updated version of
outlook/outlook express and others all block 'web bugs' by default, so no
information will be sent to hosts on the web without your express permission

failing that, some routers come with host-by-host blocking, aka outbound
filtering by host name (my netgear wireless router certainly does). That
might be a good move.

I know for certain the version of outlook included with Office 2003 blocks
ALL content from the web by default. I think Office XP has an update on
officeupdate.microsoft.com to do the same - however I think office 2000
might be out of its support cycle (as it's two versions old). please check
on the office website http://www.microsoft.com/office/

thanks

The firewall is the proper place to do this, but you can also use the
HOSTS file for some of this (just more of a pain). Add a HOSTS entry
of:

readnotify.com 127.0.0.1

Set your mail reading client
a) not to send reciepts
b) not to display HTML.

Job done.
