Part of the software development cycle. "Alphas" are the first stage of
testing software and the software is very buggy and may not have all the
features developed. "Betas" are when the software is further developed
but still may not have all the final features and more bugs are often
found in the testing. Then come "release candidates" (RC) where the
software features should be done and the testing is to find the final
bugs before releasing the final product to the public.

Betas are usually very usable but do not trust them for critical processes.
