Currently I am running Win2000 DNS Servers (external, split configuration).

Since I need to upgrade to Win2003 and also replace hardware, I am wondering
whether buying an appliance to offer DNS servers would be a better option.
Let me know if you have any thoughts and recommendations to which appliance
(could be loaded with Win2003 OS) I could pick. Let me know whether there is
any hidden cost of getting an appliance instead of server hardware.

Unless you have an extensive external presence I would suggest
you simply let the external zone be hosted by your domain name
or network access provider (this assumes they are good, redundant,
etc.) and that you just stick with AD integrated zones on the DCs
for internal consumption.

Frankly I cannot find any good reason to chose an "appliance" over Windows
2003 DNS for a reason other than, basically, cost.
