Setup User ID's for each kid, and don't tell them the passwords.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

it depends on the operating system you are using.

do you have to do a ctrl+alt+del to log on or do you have the screen with an
image that you click on to log on? either way you can set up accounts for
different users. go to control panel -> users accounts. see if that works
for u.

What operating system?
Windows 95/98/ME have no security and they can get in as quick as
selecting Cancel

For Windows XP, set passwords on all profiles.

Agreed, but with the caveat that you can set a password in the
BIOS of most computers that will prevent the computer loading
anything without first entering the password.

JB, check the manual that came with your computer on how to
set a BIOS password, which will work independantly of whichever
operating system your computer runs.

Be sure to use or convert to NTFS for the hard drive too! Unfortunately,
FAT doesn't have any built in security features.

There are people who prefer FAT for environments where users are 'tied' to
their own machines. The extra features of NTFS, to these people, are not as
important as the ability to reconstruct the data when the machine is
compromised or corrupted. With few, if any, external tools to recover an
NTFS drive, the first step in recovery is often to install another copy of
Windows, overwriting some of the data that you may be trying to recover.

I understand your concerns Alun, but the original question was about keeping
users separated on the same computer. That cannot be done fully without the
use of NTFS.

I guess that's what I get for coming into a discussion and missing the
start. Thanks for clarifying. As you note, my concerns are valid for a
different scenario, not that of the original poster in this thread.
