    - Master Browser Hello everybody! Let's suppose that we have a network and some workgroups on it. One of them is called GROUP (for example). The workgroup has many servers with different versions of Windows. (Win95, Win98, Win Me, Win NT4, Win 2000, Win XP and Win 2003 Server). Question 1. How do Servers in the workgroup choose the Master Browser from all of the servers with Computer Browser electrons and what does it depend on? Question 2. Suppose I have a server running Windows 2003 Enterprise server, Service Pack 1. Can I demote the existing Master Browser and promote this one? Because as we know Windows 2003 Server is more reliable.     - File Encryption in Window XP Hi, Can anyone tell me how to encrypt a file in Windows XP? I can do "Properties>Advanced>Encrypt contents to secure Data" but the "Encrypt contents to secure Data" is in feint font and the box cannot be ticked. My hard drive is formatted in two partitions both with NTFS. The computer is accessed by two users both with password access. Guest user is diabled. Does any one have any suggestions?     - popup messages & a home page that I can't get rid of I am trying to cleanup my explorer after a minor in the household went snooping in Adult quarters. There were no error messages, the WWW service is started, Internet Service Manager says that the site is Up&Running, the log files of IIS are writing my request, but IIS is not giving files back to the browser. I have then removed the 4 Security Bulletins, using Control Panel/add remove programs, but the site was not working anyway. I have rebooted many times the server, and I have noticed that suddenly, after 5, 10 or 20 minutues IIS starts responding to requests with the usual speed. (it seems like there is a timeout of a service and/or a dll) If have then seen in Internet Service Manager that the Execute Permission of my ASP applications was set to: Scripts and Executable and not to Scripts like it should be normally. I Have changed that to Scripts, and from that moment everything works fine, so If I reboot the server, IIS starts resonding to requests just after the reboot, like it does normally. I haven't been able to reproduce the problem, because if I change it back to scripts and executable it works fine. I don't know if one of that 4 Security Bulletins have caused this problem, even after having removed them, or if someone has been able from the Internet to alter my web server.     - Protecting Documents from Printing I have a Powerpoint document (Office XP) that I have protected as read only (set a password for modify / change). I have also made it into a PPS file (Powerpoint Presentation Show) file. It is protected and cannot be changed. However, if you right click on the file, you can still print it.     - biomouse(onclick.co) I purchased a Biomouse Fingerprint Security System from Onclick corp. Having loaded the hardware and then the software all seemed to load o.k. till the system restarted the system comes up but the only thing that shows for each window is a small 4X5 inch blank window in the middle of the screen before the system hangs . had to do a date restore to get rid of programs as i could not get into start fast enough.     - Immediate Attention Required I recently received an e mail with the subject of 'immediate attention required' and a file attached titled installer.exe. The message said this was a patch update and recommended for all windows users. Win95,win98,winme,and winxp. Supposedly this patch is designed to block a major security hole in all versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer. I am hesitant to install this patch since I don't think the message is legitimate.     - MS JVM on windows 98--uninstall? two issues really: 1. I find it silly and possibly risky to update the JVM with the latest security patch. I find it irresponsible of MS not to extend their wise "remove Java" mentality to all supported operating systems, and I urge them to do so. Is there a way to uninstall the MS JVM? When one hides Internet Explorer on XP, does that remove any security risks associated with the Internet Explorer rendering engine? (some of my clients prefer not to use IE.)     - WinXP Critical Security Update KB 821557 I downloaded/installed the 821557 Critical Security Update for Windows XP from the Windows Update site. After installation/restart my PC (HP Pavilion ze 5155) running Windows XP Home w/SP1 slowed down to a practical halt. After rebooting several times, the OS returned to normal speed but I could no longer use the shortcuts I had created in the quick launch toolbar. All shortcut properties dialogues warned me that the shortcut's target was invalid; eventhough the targets existed on my hard drive. I restored my system to the pre-821557 update and all shortcuts in my quick launch toolbar work correctly again. Hi guys, there is a site I regularly go to, http://www.ggmania.com and on this site the guy has some sort of script that takes over your mouse and drags it slowly to a links on the left side of his page called, 'make this my default home page' blah blah... I couldn't get control of my mouse until it took me to that location. It could have been anything and who knows what kind of malicious intents could have been used.     - Critical Vulnerability of MS in News Yesterday I read in the newspaper yesterday that there is a critical vulnerability for all versions of Microsoft Windows and that users should go to www.microsoft.com/security for a free software repairing patch. I did that and the info said that I had to do the repair in steps. I did the first step and it took between 2-3 hours and I had to sit at my computer the whole time because of the message we get if our computer is idle for a while...that you will be disconnected in 29 seconds if you don't click STAY ONLINE. This morning I went to Review and Install Updates (as instructed yesterday) to finish the other steps for my repair. At that part it stated that it would take 2 hrs. and 23 min. The file is located in C:\WINNT\System 32 and is 100Kb, the file is called "1tcm000c.exe" or "ltcm000c.exe" (starting 1 or lower case L), original filename "ltmsg.exe" and is by a company called "LUCENT TECHNOLOGIES" and the product name is "XIRCOM Ltmsg".     - Security patches 823980 and 821557 I have installed the above patches today through Windows Update. Installation went well, but after I restarted my computer my LITE-ON LTR 48125W CD-R/RW Drive had disappeared. I tried to flash the BIOS but to no affect. Only after removing both patches and reflashing the BIOS I was able to get the drive back. 2. I cannot find Winsock 2 for Windows 98. I can find
Winsock 2 for Windows 95 but not 98.

How do I get Winsock 2 for Windows 98?
