I hope I am posting this question on the correct forum. I have an old
notebook which has Win98se and I notice in the MSCONFIG startup there is a
file KB891711.etc.
Just what is this file and is it needed? I have read a few reviews and all
seem to be uninstalling it (unclicking in startup and removing with
Add/Remove) because of problems it is causing. I have Norton AntiVirus2004
and Norton Firewall 2004 and AdAware.
Can someone offer a definitive anser? Thank you.

KB891711 is a Win98 security update released by Microsoft back in April

Thank you, I know that it is a security update, but I wanted to know: "Why is
this file needed? Why is it run at startup and running in background? I have
read a few reviews and all seem to be uninstalling it (unclicking in Startup
and removing with Add/Remove) because of problems it is causing. I have
Norton AntiVirus2004 and Norton Firewall 2004 and AdAware. Can someone offer
a definitive anser? Can it be removed? Thank you."

Long story. Your question would be better asked in
microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion newsgroup.

There was a bug in 891711 when it was first released for Win9x (Feb-05) but
it was patched (Apr-05). If you have the buggy version installed, Windows
Update will offer the patched version to you.

Thank you all.
We looked at the Properties for the KB891711.exe Application and the
Modified date was 3/23/05 and the Created date was 4/14/05. Would this mean
we have the 'newest' version of this patch? Can someone advise?

(We don't believe we are having any problems because of the KB891711 being
in the 'startup' in the msconfig.)

If Windows Update doesn't offer you 891711 now, you have the patched version
installed & have nothing to worry about, Alice.

Thank you. We notice our Win98se/IE6 is running a bit slow, but attribute
that to combination of Win98 and AOL6 and not to the KB891711. (Oh, and we
tried to the site "microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion newsgroup," but
apparently no longer available.)
Thanks again.

Perhaps you need to Take Out the Trash (http://aumha.org/a/health.htm,
Section 4). (I'd run Defrag, too.)

Also run a thorough check for hijackware:

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post
