For the past three weeks a Windows 98 SE machine has given
a General Protection Fault when installing a critical
update (841078). I have exchanged emails with Microsoft
several times during that period (they take a few days to
react). The first suggestions they made did not apply to
W98. The subsequent suggestions were easy to apply and
totally ineffective. I still get a General Protection
Fault when I attempt to install the update.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Does anyone think this is a satisfactory response from
Microsoft?

To forestall the inevitable question: I have not updated
because I have software which will not run on newer
versions, and a scanner that has no XP driver available.

Do you have any information from the fault messages about what
files/drivers/modules are involved?

Do you have any additional hotfixes/updates installed on
your machine? Is all the hardware in your system on the
WIn98 hardware compatibility list? Just wondering if you
might have a newer CD/DVD drive (or something similar)
and might be having driver issues?

What specifically does the fault message say? DOes it
point to specific files, provide specific memory
addresses etc.?
