That is normal.

Norton A/V has built in tamper protection so that other applications (like
viruses that actually attack Norton A/V) cannot find it or detect it is
running,...this also causes Windows to not detect it properly as well.

Ignore the message.

If you go to Symantec's site, its a known issue. However,
they have a patch available that will allow SP2 to detect
your AV status.

Hi

If you are not able to get the Security Center to recognise Norton
fully:

Control Panel/Security Center, click on the "Change the Way
Security Center Notifies Me" link in the left pane.

More about Symantec products and SP2 here:

For Norton 2004 products:

After installing XP Service Pack 2, the message "Your computer might
be at risk . . . " appears

As far as I know, Symantec haven't released an update for the 2003
products, only the 2004 version. Someone that just contacted Symantec
Support said that they was considering releasing an update for 2003
versions as well.

Several have reported that installing the 2004 WMI update on NAV
2003 works fine:

MVPs (or anybody) -- the recent "high priority" updates? by Steve

Steve
Thu Sep 16 15:20:26 CDT 2004

This question has been posted in various forms by various people in
various newsgroups without an authoritative answer.

Can somebody step up to the plate?

Since the release of Service Pack 2 for XP in early August and turning
the "Automatic Updates" button on after restarting from the SP2
install...

There have been 3 (three) "high priority" updates in Windows Update:

1) .NET Framework 1.0 Service Pack 3

2) .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1

3) The GDI+ Detection Tool

None of these updates has "automatically installed".

Yet, they are listed as "high priority" updates in Windows Update.

Can somebody either post to say:

1) Yes, these updates have automatically installed on my machine with
Service Pack 2 installed and "automatically install" checked.

2) No -- these specific updates -- even though they are "high
priority" updates -- will *not* automatically install for the following
reason...

Yes -- these updates will *manually* install without a problem, so it's
not like Windows Update isn't "working".

Yet, I've checked with a large number of Windows Admins around Campus
here and - *to a person* - nobody has had any of these "high priority"
updates automatically install.

And we're wondering why not.

Because we're wondering if Automatic Updates is actually broken in SP2.

Which would be a "security" problem.

Thanks!

- Steve

On our servers it specifically stated after the reboot that the patches were
not applied because there nothing installed on the machines that would have
caused the patches to be required.

So, they don't install on machine that have no component for them to
actually patch. That what the pop up message indicated.

OK, then.

But what about the two .NET updates?

Shouldn't these have been "automatically installed" if we had installed
*all* Windows Updates (including all "optional updates") *prior* to SP2
installation in August?

Or is it just a weird/confusing conicidence that there have been 3
"high priority" updates released that would *intentionally not* be
"automatically installed" on an SP2 computer?

I can understand the GDI+ thing -- it's doesn't directly affect SP2.

But the .NET stuff -- if you have it installed -- isn't that a "high
priority" patch that *should* be automatically installed?

Or is the question one that *all three* of these updates should *not*
have been in the "high priority" section of W.U., but, rather in the
"optional" section and MS is just making this series of patches
confusing?

That's what nobody here at U of M seems to get and we can't find any
documentation relating to this.

I've witnessed same behavior in a Win 2K environment. Am sure MS is on top of
this as we speak.

Right?
