Once I go online on my computer and see a prop-up Windows
Messenger message saying that "A newer version of
messenger is availabe. You MUST download in order to
continue" and with buttons for action.

I suspect this is something virus; does anyone know of
such instant message? Any advice and thoughts? Thanks.

Probably just a Messenger spam trying to sell you software you do not
need. Have you updated all your MS products? Why not turn off the
Messenger service.

Have you got a firewall running? Like Sygate, Zonealarm,
or even just the Windows XP built-in firewall?
