Hello
When I posted that I could not install Norton Personal
Firewall and got a message "The MSIEXE.EXE File is Linked
to Missing Export MSIDLL 222", some nice gentleman on this
list informed me that I would need to install the Subject
Window.
I have acquired that WEB page and have read about the
Overview and System Requirements. It does seem quite a
daunting effort to this novice. However, my question(s) -
apparently the download size is 1670KB. Will this add on
to what's already there or will the Installer uninstall
all that went before. In other words will the Windows
Installer 2.0 start with a fresh board so to speak? Will
it restore the information that I have saved and the
programs that are already installed? How long is the
estimated time to install this? Will I be hit with a bunch
of "heady" questions such as "Do you wish to add file
extensions? etc. etc. Lastly and the most important, what
is the worst possible thing that can happen to my computer
if things go wrong? After this new installation, will
everything look, feel, and act as though nothing different
happened? Sorry about the length of this but I have been
this entire day talking with Norton (not much help) and
then studying the Microsoft webpage. It's exhausting!!
Thank you
Renee

Well, it seems that you don't know much about computers etc. I would
really recommend you to find someone who knows about computers and can
help you with that. If you have these problems only installation Norton
Personal Firewall I can promise you you will have many more once you got
it running and most likely you will end up still with an infected
computer because you were not able to configure NPF properly. Look into
your yellow pages and you will most likely find people that will help
with all that. I know it costs money but do you think it is worth
spending even more time (and money) continuing with all these problems
you have right now? If it is a good guy you might not even need NPF
because on a well-configured stand-alone computer there is no need to
run a firewall because it is not working as a server. (The last sentence
though depends on what you want to do and where to use the computer
which makes things so complex and that is why you really should consult
someone...)

MSI 2.0 will replace some of the older files (with new versions) plus
add some new files. The install, as I recall, is really easy. You just
run it. No questions other than maybe to Continue. The download pages
tell you any special instructions that you need to know. In fact, as
per the instructions, don't even bother to keep the downloaded file but
instead select to open the download (after it goes into temporary
space). However, if you are using a dial-up connection then you
probably do want to save the file and then run it. You won't need it
around again unless you do a fresh reinstall of the OS.

You will need the new version for more than just installing Norton
stuff. In fact, some programs will include a copy and automatically
install it (usually after a prompt) so the real product install can then
continue. Obviously this bloats the installation files. None of what
you installed before will disappear from the history lists (they get
recorded in the registry). Time to install is a couple minutes (after
downloadeded). Most of the information about MSI is unimportant to the
end user installing the software that uses it. It is of importance to
the developer writing the installation program.

You have a couple places to download from depending on what version of
Windows you have (which you did not mention):

Windows Installer 2.0 Redistributable for Windows 95, 98, and Me
http://snipurl.com/4m4x

Windows Installer 2.0 Redistributable for Windows NT 4.0 and 2000
http://snipurl.com/mtm

MSI 2.0 is already in Windows XP.
