At 1st, I thought it was a relatively new (but old) so called but not officially known as virus named "Recycler Virus". Only 1 company (of Asian www address name) claims it is a virus and what they told me is it changes the windows registry (Windows XP) and none of what they listed actually occured in my Home Edition w/SP2. BUT that damned thing could not be deleted and resurfaced AFTER formatting the computer and a quick visit to windows update and sophos.com (antivirus). The computer would freeze upon any bootup except administrator in safe mode (any version of safe mode in xp) Okay. Next thing. Anybody study Hinduism? Remember Bill Gates transfered a huge relationship to India years ago? Them Indians activate Windows XP by phone. Can anyone tell me how the windows confirmation will tell me i got a digit (number) wrong if my computer does not have the confirmation ID at all and randomly generates the 9 group series of 6 numbers? Oh, BTW, not connected to any wiring hard or wireless and no internet at all too. The man on the phone with me told me that the confirmation ID number is randomly generated there at his office. It was 7:15 a. m. there, near 10 pm est here. Hinduism & MTV. A man stands on the shore of the Indian Ocean and a woman in Maine w/o photos, computers, internet, phone, tv can see what he sees there. MTV had a video of four women in different places of the Earth could see what any one of the others could see - by the minds eye. This is your computer, Apple Mac, Linux or PC Windows (any version). This is your brain behind your eyes. Mix it all together and you got. Well you got the 21st century at (mostly your) command. Windows Vista anybody? Heh, A Microsoft Tech Support person told me via phone that when Vista is in one computer and you remove that hard drive (for any reason) and put it in an identical / replica computer, the hard drive will not boot up and you will be lucky if you can format the hard drive. It's called encryption (if you did not know). Regarding the Homeland Security Department announcement back in early August 2006 about a flaw in Microsofts OS's and get the patch. Some of us, most of us and maybe all of know now that the patch froze computers and corrupted memory. If not that patch, one or two or three recently released this August 2006. How many "illegal" copies of Vista are around? Hey, if it weren't for "illegal", well remember Napster and KaZaA - IMHO they weren't illegal, just a pain in thy AS* for anybody exept the user. Okay, there were problems there too. Um, did Microsoft tell you outright up front and before you installed the update that your XP/98SE/98/ME/95 was subject to "beta" testing by them or anyone else regarding encryption - Vista? Did anyone tell you? Oh, if you are like me, you were somewhat aware of "use at your own risk" policy, stated or not stated by any company/friend/stranger anywhere. As I was typing this all up, a passerby more than 30 feet away outside this window said aloud "powerful". Ya, the part about Hinduism is indeed powerful and add the brain meets the computer and MTV too, that's really powerful. I'm thinking by 2050 I would be able to put on a pair of sunglasses and watch TV or read email on 1/2 a lense while driving down the road (he he he he) and listen to the next U2 or W. K. Mahler from the earpiece embedded on the sunglass arm..... Remember, if I want to recycle computer parts (Recycler Virus) I oughta be able to anytime I want.     - proposed implementation of an Enterprise CA I have a few questions regarding a proposed implementation of an Enterprise CA into our production environment, which Iâ??m hoping people can give me feed back on. Iâ??ve read a lot of the Microsoft documentation on PKI, however sometimes thereâ??s no substitute to real word experience etc. The drive behind the need to deploy a PKI is the move to RADIUS Auth PEAP MSCHAP v2 for our Wireless clients. Iâ??ve successfully created a test lab using a CISCO 1100 Series AP, and one windows 2003 enterprise server running AD, IAS, IIS 6 & Enterprise CA. We have ruled out the purchase of 3rd party certificates for our IAS servers and wish to deploy a PKI. Due to our size (under one hundred users) and our modest needs to initially improve wireless security a three tier PKI seams overkill. We can also easily physically secure our Enterprise CA in a secure data centre. To Outline of our environment: All servers running Windows 2003 Enterprise with SP1, all clients winXP pro SP2 Site 1 (Secure Data centre) 1 x Enterprise root CA (proposed location) 2 x DC 1 x Exchange server Site 2 (Office1) Connected to Site 1 via hardware VPN 2 x IAS Server 2 x DC 50 x Wireless Users (Access 802.1x - PEAP MSCHAP v2) Site 3 (Office 2) Connected to Site 1 via hardware VPN 2 x IAS Server 2 x DC 50 x Wireless Users (Access 802.1x - PEAP MSCHAP v2) Questions: 1 â?? Will the deployment of a Enterprise CA in our production environment require any GP changes for DCâ??s and clients? As I understand it a single tier CA publishes the certs to AD. 2 â?? Our exchange server has a Thawte SSL cert for RPC/HTTPS and OWA access. Can we scrape this on renewal and issue our own from our Enterprise CA? And if so will this only work for access via domain member machines and non domain members will be required to install a cert from us? 3 â?? Once the Enterprise CA has issued the cert to the IAS servers thereâ??s no â??continualâ?? traffic between the Enterprise CA and IAS servers? i.e. only if revoked etc. 4 â?? I donâ??t need IIS on the CA as web enrolment is only needed for win2000 or non windows clients and all my clients are winXP pro SP2. Correct? 5 â?? A open ended question I know but any thoughts I guess - In my test lab it was simply a case of installing the Enterprise CA, gpupdate and off I went.     - Event 675 on my nerves I recently changed my password, after doing so I am finding that one of our servers is using my credentials for some event and is causing my account to lock out. The requests do not come at regular intervals, and typically come a couple at a time. First 2 then another 3 or first 1 then 2 more then another 2. In any case I'm going mad trying to figure this one out. Here's some other ideas I've already tried...Anyone else have suggestions on how I can find what is using my credentials on a regular basis? The server in question has no rogue RDP/ terminal server sessions that would cause this. None of the services listed show my username in the 'Log on as' field. There are no mapped drives (other than loginscript drives) that reference my user info.     - Need Advice on spoolsv.exe I'm having trouble with my PC when I start up it sometimes Locks and the CPU usage is at a maximum. After running Ad-Aware, McAfee VirusScan and AntiSpyware(all up to date) nothing showed up. On a start up one time I got a brief message about a spoolsv.exe error so after each start up I check Process Explorer and see spoolsv.exe running and its Location is C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\spoolsvc.exe. After I did some research I now find some sites and forums say its a spybot worm and should be Deleted while others say its a system file for Network Printing and I could be in Danger if I touch it. When I ran a Search I found it at three locations. They are C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\i386\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\$hf_mig$\KB896423\SP2QFE\spoolsv.exe When I ran sigverif it says C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe has not been digitally signed. What Action can I take with any or all of these .exe files? Can I Delete or should I Fix in Hyjack This? If this file is Deleted will I be able to start up OK? or is there another action I can take? It can be installed on the client machines when I connect to the site using HTTP but it doesnt download and install on the client machine when i use HTTPS (SSL) to connect to the site. Why is that?     - smartcard , IE For windows login I use username/password. ------------------------- I see the same certificate in IE certificates list the certificate in the SmartCard. But IE never try to read the certificate and send to the server when the Server is asking client certificate during SSL handshake. If I have a non smartcard certificate in the personal tab of IE Certificate list, It is working fine. IE sending that certificate to Server. My xbox cannot create a user account on my pc. when I go into lusrmgr.msc, it says: This computer is running Windows XP Home Edition. This snapin may not be used with that version of Windows.     - Eliminating User signon on Windows XP I have a simple question -- a change has recently been made in the way we sign onto our PC, I assume from some Windows Update, and I cannot figure out how to change back to the old procedure. There are only two of us using this PC, and there is NO need to have to click onto a user-specific icon to start up Windows XP and move onto tthe desktop we share (i.e. no need to select a user to load personalized desktop images -- we use the same desktop). I cannot figure out how to eliminate this step, and allow our PC to move straight to the desktop without having us to choose the only user we have identified.     - password hackers Hi, over the last three mornings i have tried to log into msn as usual. But on two occasions a message has popped up and has denied me access to my account, saying my password has changed. I believe somebody is changing my password and i am having to answer my personal question every time to log in. I do not wish for this to carry on even if it is only a joke, which i believe it may be. The first time my password got changed i was sent a bizarre e-mail when i logged in saying "i was very very very drunk when i did this your new password is *******. I just it was a joke. Ithen decided to change my password as a security measure. The next time i got a text from a friend as he had recieved an email stating that my new password was "haidoneitagain". However i did not send this e-mail so i have come to the conclusion that somebody is using my account without me knowing. Once again i had to log in through my personal question. I may be being silly but i am starting to get annoyed, i want this to stop and at least find out who is doing this. Any help regarding this question will be much appreciated.     - Authentication and smart cards Hi! I have started the deployment of smart cards in my organisation. I'm in a test phase to see what problems will occur and I have already run into several. We use smart cards and smart card readers so there is no soft certificate on the computers. We have Windows Server 2003 och Windows XP Sp2 on the clients. I want the users to only use the smart card and interactive logon should only be allowed with the smart card. Problems: 1. The users can no longer log into Outlook Webb Access, since the password is unknown. It is set to something were long the same time I activate the option to only allow interactive logon via smart card. Are Microsoft coming up with a solution so OWA can authenticate the user from a smart card reader ? Is there any other solution to this problem? 2. We use smart phones. Very nice tool, but I have the same problem here. The smartphone wants my username, password and domin name to start synchronizing with the Exchange Server. I don't have the password.     - Logging activity on client PCs I have a Windows 2000 Server machine acting as a member server on a SBS 2003 domain. The member server is a file server, with shared volumes which clients map to. One particular drive contains .dbf and .mdx dBase 5.7 proprietry software, where the developer has suspected someone has opened a .dbf in "exclusive" mode, hence locking the file. He suspects that it could be Excel/Access or FoxPro. This file has read/write access because it records what users have entered as search parameters in the software. What I am concerned about is the fact that someone on the network is opening the files and maybe gaining knowledge of the table structures etc... of this software. So, is there: 1) a logger software I can install onto the server or clients that logs every file opened/accessed? 2) a logger software which I can install onto the server only which can tell me if a file was opened by a third party program, i.e. Excel/Access? 3) someone to help me???     - Cisco PIX woes with MS Cert Service on Windows 2000 To all, we have our certificate service running standalone mode on one of our Windows 2000 servers. Among other things, we use the Cert Svr to issues certificates to our Cisco networking products, e.g., our PIX, via the mscep. Here is the problem, our CA certificate was successfully renewed. However, the Certificate Server's RA encryption and signing certificates have expired. I see no way to cause them to be renewed.     - All access rights gone I recently made a test account to restrict access on a terminal server(TS). After I denied that account from accessing other patrs and folders of the TS I noticed that some other user rights were also gone. Now I have some important files without any user rights at all and I can't access or copy them. How can I get access to those files?     - Access is Denied Please help! I have 2 computers and I transferred one hard drive from one to the other. I did have a password set on that drive as you entered Windows XP. Now on the other computer, the harddrive's folders show up but ACCESS IS DENIED to most including My Documents because I must have encrypted it at some point I think. Or is it the password that's causing it to be accessed. How do I bypass/get rid of the passwords/encryption? I hope that my explanation is clear enough. Thanks for any tips.     - Password Protect File and/or Folders Hello. I'm looking for a way to simply password protect files and/or folders. My goal is to have a folder for each member or our management team that has a password on it. So far, I've use compressed files which works well enough but we want to be able to write back to the files without having to save them then move them back into the compressed folder.     - Access Control Models What are the different default and optional access control models for the following systems: Win NT Win 2000 (workstation and server) Win XP Win 2003 Server I read multiple reports that differ in opinion. Some say DAC for NT and 2000 and others say MAC and then some others say RBAC. I think that an upgrade exists to enable RBAC in NT and 2000 but that default it is DAC.     - CREATOR OWNER assigning issue I am working on hardening WinXP systems for the corporation I am employed with, and a certain security setting I am trying to implement designated that the CREATOR OWNER account is to have Full Access to subfolders and files only (file and folder permission/registry permission); however no matter what I have tried it will not allow me to add CREATOR OWNER stating it does not exist in the Domain (being tested in a lab setting first, which I know it exists as it shows up everywhere I look). I have implemented all other system security settings and hooked the machine up to an active environment to try it out, and it would allow me to add CREATOR OWNER from the live Domain, but does not allow me to change rights. I do have administrator access to make the changes, and this is the only issue I have encountered and wondered if anyone out there may have an idea as to what may be the cause behind this.     - DOS game crashes XP Hello. A DOS game downloaded from http://www.reloaded.org/download/Castle-Wolfenstein/24/ is able to completely lock up Windows XP running on a Duron system. The game loads, but runs in an extremely fast loop. There is no way to exit the game gracefully, so I press Alt + Enter to switch from fullscreen to Window mode. At this point my screen goes black and the keyboard is useless. I must do a hardware reset. How is this DOS game able to crash Windows XP? I found that if I launched the game at a very slow speed with Mo'Slo 4BIZ, I was able to use Alt + Enter, but instead of having the game appear FROZEN in a window, it was minimized. I could then close the game while minimized, but if I pressed Alt + Enter again, Windows locked up with black screen. Here's an oddity: With game minimized, I opened Task Manager. I saw a new process appear: wuauclt.exe. According to MS, this is the auto update process, but I don't have auto update enabled. How is this DOS game able to crash Windows XP?     - Slow FTP initial connection through XP firewall I am running a XP pro machine with the windows firewall enabled. I want to regularly FTP or RCP a small file from this XP machine to a single Linux machine, but when I initiate the connection, there is around a 30 second lag before I am prompted with a request for a username (using FTP). When I turn off the XP firewall, there is no 30 second lag. I've tried opening all the FTP ports on my XP firewall, but it's not fixing the problem. I'm not familiar with how this is working, but it seems that when I try to initiate a connection to this Linux machine, the Linux machine then tries to talk back to the XP machine, but is being blocked by the windows firewall.     - virus sent in yousendit email notification Yesterday I got an email from yousendit - the company which enables you to send large zipped files by filling in a form to upload to their site, and the other party downloads them at the other end - via a notification email from yousendit . (I think that is how it works!) Anyway, this time the email was just filled with a large advertisement. There were no refs to a download - as there usually is. Almost immediately afterwards I got a note from Norton anti virus saying that 2 risks had been repaired (I think deleted...) 1. Downloader virus. 2. Trojan.ByteVerify virus. I tried to visit the yousendit site myself and log in, but got a page of typing that looked like the page underwriting or supporting the normal yousendit form, rather than the form itself. The yousendit file that Norton picked up, was one of several that I was expecting (I knew a friend would be sending me 2 or 3.) I deleted all of them, just in case. I know he sent the same files to another friend, and she received them free of viruses, without any problems. The problem therefore does not seem to be coming from his computer. This morning I saw that there was another yousendit notification email in my inbox. It refered to a photograph that I sent someone about 2 weeks ago. The person I sent it to says she knows nothing about this email, and it seems highly suspicious. I have deleted it. I have changed my gmail account filter so that all yousendit files will in future be deleted as spam, Maybe I need to set up an account dedicated only to yousendit ? If any problems occurred again, it would at least be easy just to close the account. I wondered if others had experienced this problem and how they dealt with it.     - Error messages picked up by Spybot I am a McAfee subsciber but also use Spybot to run a check. Last Saturday it brought up 3 files that posed a security risk. They all began: Windows Security Centre Then after the first it had Disabled, after the second Disable Notify and after the third Firewall Disable Notify. I have checked the McAfee setting and they are all operational and Spybot blocked these items, but what do they mean and can I be sure that the system is working ok?
