I have a bunch of PCs that need SP4. I've also already sent MS03-039 to all
of them. Do I need to reapply MS03-039 after installing SP4?

Thanks,

Tom

Yes.

Lyle and Tom,

I ran a quick test on an SP3 system, installing MS03-039 and then SP4. All
tools (HfnetchkLT, MSBA and PatchLink) showed the system as still patched. I
have not as yet verified the individual file information, but it appears
that all is intact.
Lyle, have you run into the opposite situation?

Charlie

No, since we keep our systems up-to-date with service packs, we haven't
encountered a situation where we had them out of order.

I based my reply on the order of release of the Service Pack and the
patch, and general practice. Your tests show that it probably doesn't
apply in this case, which means that the SP doesn't overwrite anything
updated by the patch.

Still and all, although that may work in this case (patch, then SP), it
may not work in other cases...

My understanding of the situation is that you do not have to reinstall the
patch, either on XP (pre sp1/sp1) or Windows 2000 (spx/sp4) but I can't cite
chapter and verse(looked, but can't find substantiation) but I think Charles
Otstot's results are expected and are not an accident.

Good news, you do not have to reapply MS03-039 after
upgrading your systems to SP4. The installer is written
to check for dates and should not overwrite a newer file
(MS03-039 binaries) with an older file (SP4 binary).

I had a range of machines using SP 2 and 3 that were patched and have since
had SP4 installed over the top.
A scan of the network using the MS supplied tool that looks for vulnerable
machines shows them as still secure.
