Here is the situation.
I have 2 laptops.
The one I am on is working.
My previous one is screwed.
I am willing to PayPal any tech who knows how to fix this problem.

The Operating system (Windows XP) can not be recognized.
The hard drive inside the laptop (which I can not even begin to figure
out how to take out) is the only contents I wish to retrieve, rescue,
save.

I can get to the point of partitioning the computer through the "wwbmu"
prompt but everything is written in German, which I could wing through
it all but truthfully I don't know anything about partitioning without
destroying the contents on my hard drive.

I also have a Windows 98 bootup CD (in English) which is more or less
asking me create a partition but if I do that will that destroy my hard
drive contents or what?

The options are :

1. Create partition
2. Delete partition
3. Select bootable partition

Can I save my hard drive contents by repartitioning or what?

The only Windows XP disc set that I have came with the laptop and it
will completely restore my laptop to it's original condition wiping out
all the contents on the hard drive.

Anyway, I am willing to PayPal anyone who can rescue my hard drive any
fee needed.
Just please be some tech who knows what he's doing (lol).
I have a cell phone where talking is free after 7pm Central so I can
call you or if you have a cell phone you can call me.
Or we can do it through AIM (Instant Message).
But I think it would be better/quicker for both of us by cell phone.

Email me and I can give you my cell phone number and we can take it
from there:

do not partition - that will destroy data

You need some local shop to take the drive out, fit it into
another XP (or other Windows that reads NTFS filesystem)
and copy your data to CD/DVD

Well then is there a version of Windows XP that will restore Windows
without destroying the hard drive content?

Any of them, all of them. Assuming that you have a valid, readable
partition on the disk, which from your post may not be the case, an XP
install will offer you the choice of using the existing partitions, or
deleting them and creating new ones. Simply chose to use the existing
partition(s) during the install.

If you're willing to pay, then why don't you just take the machine to a
professional computer repair shop (not your local version of
BigStoreUSA) and have them do it? That would be the most practical
course of action unless you live in the back-of-beyond. According to
your IP, you're somewhere in the Southwestern United States. Groves,
Texas? I'm sure that there are competent computer shops in Texas!

You can get the data off with either Knoppix, a Bart's PE, or ERD
Commander (very expensive but there is an emergency download).

Here's information on using Knoppix:

An easy way to retrieve Windows files is to boot with Knoppix, a Linux
distro on a live cd. You will need a computer with two cd drives, one
of which is a cd/dvd-rw OR a usb thumb drive with enough capacity to
hold your data. To get Knoppix, you need a computer with a fast
Internet connection and third-party burning software. Download the
Knoppix .iso from www.knoppix.net and create your bootable cd. Then
boot with it and it will be able to see the Windows files. If you are
using the usb thumb drive, right-click on its icon (on the Desktop) to
get its properties and uncheck the box that says "Read Only". Then
click on it to open it. Note that the default mouse action in the
window manager used by Knoppix (KDE) is a single click to open instead
of the traditional MS Windows' double-click. Otherwise, use the K3b
burning program to burn the files to cd/dvd-r's.

True enough, although it sounds as if OP may have a valid OEM
provided system restore disk, some of which only install from a
format on up.

Wooh! Wooh! Wooh! Wait a minute there? How do you have our IPs (not that I'm
worried about you doing anything to my computer), but my curiosity is
tingiling and your answer might help me with a situation I'm dealing with.

Obviously, you did not get that information from my IP.
That's my Yahoo information.
And whatever reason I have for not taking it to a store and leaving my
PCs with them for however many days I need is my business.
I like learning how to work on my things myself if I have to take a
computer course to do it with.

You can relax.
He only thinks he has our IP information.
He has the fake information I used when I signed up with Yahoo.

This is very elementary computing. Just look at the headers. Maybe you
can't do that with the web interface, but I've already told you how to
use a newsreader.

Lots of good advise, but it seem no one is asking the critical
questions that would help determine whether a "screwed"
hard drive means just OS bootability is toasted or whether
the hard drive has hard, lower level problems. If it is just
not bootable due to some corruption, then any moderately
good computer geek could get most data off without effort
or damage that would prevent later use of for-fee low level
data recovery if it turns out needed.

Yep. And there are 2.5 to 3.5 inch tray kits for Ide drives so
you can plug a laptop drive onto a desktop for even less $s.
