I've read alot here about the importance of a firewall,
then alot of other messages about problems after
installing a firewall. Makes me nervious. What firewall
vendor/brand should one use when there are so many out
there? Had planned on Norton Security 2004 but see
messages about problems people are having with that one
also. Seems like an oximoron when you purchase something
to help protect you but it only causes other or new
problems. Welcome any suggestions on which top 2 or 3
brands should be seriously considered. thanks.

Depending on your internet connection and surf behaviour.
I think it is not too important to have a firewall, if one try sygate
www.sygate.com
Virus scan: stinger is ok http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
For more thorough scanning use the online freescan
http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp?cid=9059
Also check www.tomcoyote.com/spybot & www.tomcoyote.com/hjt

I use the free version of Zone Alarm. I've heard good things about it and haven't had any problems. You have enabled your built-in ICF haven't you?

Zone Alarm seems good for novice users and Sygate for more advanced users
that are more familiar with operating system mechanics and tcp/ip
configuration including port connections. Both are free to try. If you have
a cable/dsl connection I also strongly suggest you get a nat router such as
those from Linksys, D-Link, Netgear, etc that can be had for as little as
$20 after rebates. They are pretty much set and forget devices for the
average user that do the all important job of blockinig uninitiated inbound
traffic in a default configuration. The risk with personal firewalls is that
they can be misconfigured more easily and even fail during some kinds of
attacks or conflicts with other software. Kerio has a free new firewall out,
but I would not recommend it to novice users. --- Steve

It is absolutely imperative to have a firewall, regardless of your computer
usage. You don't leave the door to your house unlocked and open all the
time, do you? ;-)
