Zone Alarm seems good for novice users and Sygate for more advanced users
that are more familiar with operating system mechanics and tcp/ip
configuration including port connections. Both are free to try. If you have
a cable/dsl connection I also strongly suggest you get a nat router such as
those from Linksys, D-Link, Netgear, etc that can be had for as little as
$20 after rebates. They are pretty much set and forget devices for the
average user that do the all important job of blockinig uninitiated inbound
traffic in a default configuration. The risk with personal firewalls is that
they can be misconfigured more easily and even fail during some kinds of
attacks or conflicts with other software. Kerio has a free new firewall out,
but I would not recommend it to novice users. --- Steve
