Hi-

This icon has(suddenly)appeared in my sys-tray. It looks
like a redish x with a dot for a head. When you roll over
it it says "support.com Agent". If you right-click it says
something about connecting with "Nexus Communications". It
doesn't give me an option to delete it, or even see
properties.

Web and newsgroup searches haven't really found anything
specific. (there are a lot of nexuses and support.coms!)

I don't see it in add/remove programs.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
M.

Try adaware for removal of pests and or
cwshredder, hijackthis, the usual list of pest removal
software.
Check in the msconfig and see if it's listed as loading on
startup..

If I remember correctly, support.com agent is a program
that Comcast adds onto your pc for tech support. It can
retrieve info from your computer (kinda like spyware but
for tech issues) and sends it out to Comcast when you have
probs with your service.

I don't think it's a security risk or anything like that,
but I could be wrong... ya know, there's a first time for
everything.

I did a search using google with the string "support.com
agent", INCLUDING the quotes. Found serveral references
to it, like this one for COX communications.

http://support.microsoft.com/newsgroups/default.aspx?NewsGroup=3Dmicrosof=
t.public.security&SLCID=3DUS&ICP=3DGSS3&sd=3DGN&id=3Dfh;en-us;newsgroups

Main reference in it being:

7Q. What is the Support.com agent?
7A. During the migration CD install process, the
support.com agent builds "protections" for the users PC.
The first is a pre-conversion protection of the user's
personal address book, browser preferences, network
settings, etc. As soon as the conversion is completed and
the software verifies that that the new settings are
functional, it builds another protection. The user can
access this protection later to restore, or "heal" their
settings in the unlikely event they encounter a problem.=20

8Q. Does the Support.com agent send information about my
PC, files or any of my personal information to Cox?
8A. No. This tool is used simply to apply protections to
the computer's configuration during the installation process.=20

So you could check out some of the other google listing.=20

Thanks all!

We are pretty careful about what we click-on and what we
agree to-- don't know how a Cox connection could have
(ahem) wormed its way in.
