up now, our elected officials will cave to a multi-million dollar lobbying

I strongly recommend http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DClkE64nFDY for an
entertaining take on this from "The Daily Show," with the inimitable Senator
Ted Stevens, third in line for the US presidency.

What actually happens to data from external sources outside anyway?

ie: outside the known world (Europe, for example).

I have seen it. It is quite funny but also scare when you think that this
person is making decisions that affect all of us...

Now on to the serious topic at hand:

I posted the question as to start people thinking about this issue. Now, the
topic is a little off the computer security theme however, this issue is
quite important and DOES have security implications.

How? You are a small company and can not afford the extortion premium that
AT&T wants you to pay. As such your web site traffic is slower when someone
DOSes you and guess what, under these circumstances a DOS is far more
devastating!!!

1. All of us already pay for bandwidth why should you pay twice?

2. Who is to say that AT&T, Verizon, etc should control the Internet? The
Internet has done quite well, without any one company or country
controlling it.

3. Do you really trust corporate America controlling the Internet? Look at
the current state the American News agencies. American News agencies are
heavily filtered and used to "sell" American political interests. So will
the Internet. If American political interests do not like a site that
publishes information countray to what Corporate America is selling, do you
really think that you will be able to view their comments?

4. Small sites will simply disappear because they can not afford the
extortion costs. This very newsgroup could disappear or could become so
slow that usage drops to near zero. Remember newsgroups are free!

5. Finally, the Internet will become a totally corporate environment. Gone
will be the enthusiast site, the informational site, the home user site and
the small business site as these do not generate the revenue needed to pay
the extortion premium.

Please take some time and check the site out. You do not have to agree with
me but, please get informed.

They would follow the same rules when entering/leaving the US Internet...

For example, let's say I have a personal web site that is against the war in
the Middle East. I do not pay the internet extortion and as such, no one
can visit my site because it is "too slow".

I visited the site quite some time ago, and am fully in agreement with you
on this.

The ISPs are trying to quietly push this through congress with millions of
lobbyist dollars. Send the link to your friends...the more the issue is
known the less of the chance it will succeed...
