This popped up on my computer:
Privacy Vulnerability Detected (292 MPV
Warning) ..."your internet activities are being
recorded."
It somehow made itself become my homepage, which I
altered back.
How did it appear on my computer in the first place?
Will it come back?
Is it truly from Microsoft Windows and legitimate?
If so, what are the ramifications of it appearing on my
computer?

Its not from MS, its just some scum sucking company using scare tactics
to get you to buy thier garbage software.

Install, update and run Adaware, spybot and while you're at it
hijackthis. As well as your anti virus software of course as you have
unwanted guests on your computer.

Does the window title say anything about Messenger? If so, you need a
firewall. 'Messenger spam', is not in itself harmful, but is symptomatic of
a larger problem - your computer has ports open from the Internet.

You can disable the Messenger service, but that is unwise as a solution as
you'll still have the underlying problem that caused you to get the messages
in the first place - consider the messages a useful warning that you have no
protection from the Internet. This is all too important now, given the
recent rash of RPC worms....

For a standalone machine, see www.sygate.com for a free personal firewall,
or if using Windows XP, you can enable the built-in internet connection
firewall (ICF).

See http://securityadmin.info/faq.htm for more info. Also,
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/nopopups.htm is a good resource - although
for browser popups, you might want to consider http://toolbar.google.com -
it works like a champ and is also handy for searching. Also run AdAware or
Spybot (google 'em) to clean up your browser hijack.

I got this same message. I have been downloading alot of free softwar
from download.com including AI Robot and other websearch toolbars.
tried to get rid of it by running Adaware, but that did not work. Th
simple solution was to reset my homepage to About:blank. Bye By
anoying ad. Don't know what set it off, but it sent me to the Evidenc
Eliminator website - a ripoff program if ever there was one. Doe

If AdAware doesn't find something, Spybot Search & Destroy probably will.
Google it.
