    - Adware/ Spyware Hello all! I have a question, and I'm sure you all have heard this over and over again. I have been beating my head in, trying to get the Adware/ Spyware off of my computer. It has my computer hostage! I have installed Spybot (Search and Destroy), and Adware, both which have detected certain items and quarantined. The problem is: I still have the same problems (Slow start-up booting, home page changes, search functions and all others associated with spyware.) Does any one have any idea if there is any other alternatives to rid my computer of this junk? I have been told by some of my IT people at work to wipe my hard disc clean and re-install everything again (of course, after saving everything on a disc.)     - Pop-up Stopper Free Edition Anyone recommend Pop-up Stopper Free Edition (Panicware)? I can't go by CNET.com reviews since there are none! The latest version (released Aug 4) has none, and the previous version has a high download count yet mysteriously low positive or negative reviews. I know people recommended Google Toolbar to me in a previous thread here, but I want a low-maintenance, low- memory-using pop-up blocker that is spyware-free and toolbar-free! (Not suggesting Google Toolbar installs spyware.) So, can anyone who used BOTH of them recommend Pop-up Stopper to me with as much vigor as you would muster up for Spybot and Ad-aware?     - I.E.security update for I.E. 6 service pack1(KB867801) Auto update attempts to install Cumulative security update for I.E.6 (KB867801). During attempted restart and set- up, I get message on Black screen, "Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2." Then below that on same screen it says, "Windows could not upgrade 1 or more syst. files b4 starting- windows may not start or run properly. If windows fails to start, run set-up again". I'm running Windows ME. And this auto update keeps trying to d/l and install but never seems to complete the job. Just same message time after time.......     - Multiple user identities, XP and resident spyware checkers I have just set up several user identities on my machine (Windows XP Home) and I notice that when I change users, AVG antivirus and Zone Alarm automatically appear in the system tray, but Spybot resident and Spyware Guard do not. Does this mean that they are not active when a different user is logged on, or are they still active in the background but not visible? How do I set it up so that these spyware resident programs are automatically active for all users? I'm sorry if this is a totally elementary question, but I cannot afford to have these programs not active when my children are using the computer logged on under their own seperate user identities. Question: Would someone please suggest an efficient method for stripping the comments from the HOSTS file, i.e, reducing the HOSTS file to a two column format of the form: 127.0.0.1 blockthissite.com In the past, I've used Cygwin's UNIX emulation to accomplish the task, but at ~150 MB disk space, that's a bit too pricey. I have UnxUtils, but there are two problems: (1) DOS batch files calling the UnxUtils' .exe's require a screwy syntax that isn't documented, requiring a trial-and-error approach, and (2) I cannot figure out how to write a zsh shell script and make it execute in XP.     - Service failed to start Hi, For 3 days now, when I restart my servers, all the services running with a domain account fail to start. The error msg is "... logon failure". When I re-enter the password in the ad-hoc field and press OK, the system says that the service has just been granted the logon localy permission, but the service will not start anymore.     - Latest Patch Problem? Not sure if this is the right forum but I think I have a new behavior since applying the latest security patch to my XP PRO dell machine. My I.E. browser Version: 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633 thinks it's offline when it isn't. I will browse to a URL and I get the dialog box that says do I want to connect or stay offline. After clicking that off and hiting enter a couple of times it will finally give me my web page. This symptom started immediately after applying the patch the other day.     - Windows Critical Update Notification Glitch Hi group, Wucrtupd.exe runs and I get the indicated updates (Win98 upgrade from WFW3.11). The dialog indicates updates were successfully installed and the log also indicates the same. The next time the program runs it lists the following as needed ~ 817787: Security Update Windows Media Player 7.1 Q320920: Security Update (Windows Media Player 7.1) At first I didn't even have that application on my system (don't really want it).     - Deploying VPC with Security options I would like to deploy Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 using the MSI-file. I would like however for the Security settings to be set once the MSI-file has been run. No matter what, any of the Properties>Security I look at, I see Administrator and my user account (as expected) but I also see a SYSTEM on all of them. I know what Administrator, Group, and all of those are if I see them here, but SYSTEM I do not know, even after looking at Help to see what it is. When I try to remove it, it says "Cannot remove because it's inheriting permissions from the parent." I understand why I can't remove Administrator, but why can't I remove SYSTEM?     - Google toolbar I'm considering downloading the Google Toolbar (mostly for the pop-up blocking feature, although I always use Google 100% of the times for search engine purposes as well). However, the memory on my computer is maxed out to the limit and between anti-virus, firewall, Internet Explorer, and the rest, I'm running low on memory. Does Google Toolbar take up a lot of memory? Hello all

I have the latest MS security patches installed and scanned all drives for
viruses and nothing is found.

My PC is doul boot (with ME), when I boot up with ME everything is
normal.(so it is not my DSL connection).

I have deleted all cookies and internet files, task manager does not show
high usage by any program/service.

Any help is welcome. thanks.
