A simple question. Can anyone tell me if it is possible to
run BOTH a Norton Antivirus AND a Mc'afee Antivirus on the
SAME PC at the same time?? I have always been told that
you can only run ONE at a time because they conflict.
Would appreciate any advice on this subject.
Many thanks

Sounds about right. Even if they didn't cause outright errors, running two
scanners together like this would cause a big performance hit.

What might be more useful is using another scanner occasionally to get a
second opinion on what the first scanner is telling you. Many people use the
free online scanners that many antivirus software companies offer for just
this service.

As long as one is on-demand-in other words, you activate a
scan when you want to,and the other real-time,there
should not be a problem.I'd suggest, one dedicated anti-
trojan app,and one anti-virus scanner.
It is essential to have both anti-trojan anti-spyware and
anti-virus software.Impossible to expect one programme to
cover everything.

I would suggest, you make your AV realtime, and the anti-
trojan on demand. They do different jobs.

This is not the case with Mc'afee and Norton.I
believe, they will cause massive conflicts and problems if
installed in tandem on the same O.S..Not that I
personally have any knowledge or experience of these
particular products.
Ahem..

This is really not recommended as the conflicts that can arise between the
two applications will impact your computers performance and reliability.
One possibility is to have something like Stinger
(http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/) stored on a disk somewhere that you could
use for a second opinion during high risk times or if you notice something
odd going on. Just close your normal AV app and run Stinger for the check.
Another alternative you might consider if you are working in an environment
that uses servers as well as workstations is to install one product on the
server and a different one on your workstation that way you get the benefit
of two scanning engines without risking a conflict.

I have systems that have McAfee and AntiVir, McAfee and AVG, and AntiVir and
F-Prot(DOS). I only run one resident program at a time and alternate
scanning. I have had no problems in operation, but I also haven't detected
any viruses that haven't been caught by the resident program. McAfee's
install is unfriendly(makes you uninstall any other antivirus program before
it will install). But it doesn't fuss when you reinstall. I do this as sort
of a belt and suspenders approach, but up to now it hasn't shown any real
difference from just one AV program. The experts say you need a layered
defense, and it seems to me that this is one part of that solution(along
with hardware and software firewalls, anti-spyware, etc.).

It is a pain in the ass to keep up with updates.

Hope this helps.
