I am trying to fix my problem of getting my computer
hijacked with Spam, virus and other programs and needed
some help. As most of you know, I do not like the UI from
AVG, but the thing does seem to work.
This is how I have it set up now for what I think will
stop any problems, let me now what I left out.

Firewall: Zone Alarm Pro, McAfee Personal Firewall Plus,
Norton NIS,

Anti-Ad's: Spybot, Lavasoft Ad-Adware, McAfee Privacy
Sevice,

Virus, AVG 6, Sophos, Norman Antvirus, McAfee Virusscan
Pro, Norton Antivirus, IPE antivirus.

Everything runs ok together, its a little slower on
startup. What else do I need ? A hardware firewall ? I
have looked for hardware firewalls and cannot find them. I
use dial up. Might change to xp pro, is that firewall
worth it ?

1. Having more than one FireWall installed on a PC is contraindicated

2. Having more than one AV software package installed on a PC is contraindicated

3. Get a Cable/DSL Router

That's *ALL* the support you'll get from me.

Using Firewalls and Antivirus at the same time by anonymous

anonymous

Having multiple firewalls can actually counteract each
other and cause problems letting things in, choose one and
go with it.
Use one antivirus. Systems like nortons if you use norton
internet security then it has the av and firewall and
thats fine.
Also regularly using spybot and adaware that are kept
updated is good.
If you want a hardware firewall you need to install a
router that comes with a firewall, but if you just get a
good antivirus/firewall that you keep regularly updated
that that should be sufficient.
Of course one thing that goes hand in hand with all this
is awareness. Be aware of what your doing on line and what
you are opening or downloading. You can purposefully(yet
unknowingly) download things past your firewall and
software.

Just stay aware/informed/updated and you should be fine.

I have a hard time believing this setup will even run. Must use at least 50%
of memory just for the virus and other programs running. I agree with
David, one of each is the best. Althou I will use a built in anti-virus and
also at time do a on-line scan just to see if something is missing.

Dave, one question. I cannot pass up the cheap Verizon DSL deal, so DSL gets
turned on tomorrow for me.They sent me the "Westell Dual Speed Ethernet/USB"
modem to use, any comments on a good router that is a solid unit ? I have
had the most luck with D-Link and Netsys, but on this one, need some god
advice.
Thanks !

One software firewall should be enough, I like ZA.

Update SpyBot and use the immunize feature to block about
500 known bad items.

If you have the Pro (paid) version of Ad-Aware you can also
block known web sites.

There is a list of cookies/sites that can be blocked, Spy
Sites
from http://camtech2000.net/Pages/SpySites_Program.html

Hi Tedd:

Welcome to Verizon. Verizon has its own PRIVATE News Groups for OS and DSL support that
actually has Verizon personnel who provided assistance (on their own time),

First let me say you DON'T want any Verizon software on your PC. There is no need. If you
are in a former GTE area, you'll use DHCP. If you are in a former BellAtlantic area,
you'll use PPPoE. Verizon uses WinPOET but *many* don't like that software and they taut
RASPPPoE freeware as their connector. However, if you use A DSL Modem in conjunction with
a DSL/Cable Router then the Router will perform the PPPoE connection for you.

I have installed numerous Linksys BEFSR41 Routers and that is my suggested device. I
personally however use the 8 port version, BEFSR81. I also suggest with *any* Router that
TCP/UDP ports 135 ~ 139 and 445 be blocked in the Router.

I don't know much about the modem you'll get. I have a White Westell B90 series. I have
heard Verizon shipping the Westell 2100 and 2200 models. The Westell 2100 is a straight
DSL modem but the 2200 is a dual mode DSL Modem that can be used in Bridge or Router mode.
So if you get a 2200, you can put that in Router mode and try that instead of a Linksys
however, you'll need a hub or E-switch if you share your Broadband with more than one PC.
I also recommend that the modem use the Ethernet and NOT USB port.

Hope to see 'ya soon on the Verizon private News Space...

Dave
PS Another Verizon user posting/replying here is Bill Sanderson and I'm sure he can
answer any questions you might have.

Thanks much Dave !
I guessed that the Verizon software might be a gamble to use. I worked for
GTE for 18 years and would not surprise me that the same software is used.
Yes I am very much in "GTE land", live in Redmond and alot of the DSL
support still comes out of Everett. The software that comes with the
package does not say what it is, I will install it tonight and find out.

Well on the modem, I guess I have the 2100 series, It is a small white
Westell "Wirespeed" with a model number of 890-210015-04 and "Powered by
Windriver Software" marked on the bottom and on the box its called a
Wirespeed Dual Connect 0/35 VOL ?

They let me keep my old gte.net email that has been around for years, but
for some reason, I cannot get it to work on dial up the last few weeks, I
can receive fine, but get a error message when transmitting and have been
thru the setup several times and looked on the Verizon page and it appears
as all is OK, The final word I got from both Verizon and Microsoft is to
reinstall OE :-( But it works fine on my MSN account, so there must be
something else that I am just not finding.

Thanks for the comment on ports, I was going to use the USB, but will try
the Ethernet and see what happens. I even got it to work with the built in
ADSL modem what is in my Compaq desktop years ago when it was GTE ADSL
service. I will look into the Linksys BEFSR41, nice to hear from someone
that has used this before. Now I would feel better if I could get my
current email to work, its no fun just receiving emails on it, but not able
to transmit ! I get the standard message:

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'incoming.verizon.net',
Server: 'outgoing.verizon.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No,
Socket Error: 10051, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Its strange as it worked fine before, then Verizon told me not to use two
email accounts, but to use Identities and have the second Identity as the
second email. That was a mess, so I went back to the old fashioned way and
no luck. Using OE 6. I might try Outlook 2003 and see if that works any
better.
Did not know that Bill S also used Verizon, Good ! Now I have two excellent
sources of technical help if I get stuck (I have never set up DSL without
going thru at least a few hoops and changes) I think it is much like RF and
Antenna design, a little black magic and tons of experience :-)

So if all works, see you on DSL ! Thanks again for all the help.

Verizon requires Authentication on sending email. Have you given the email client both

I think I have Dave, Under the Servers tab, at the bottom (Outgoing Mail
Server) I clicked yes to Server needs Authentication and then under Setting
(to the right of the check box) I used "Use same settings as incoming mail
server" and then also went into it manually and enter the account name that
starts with vznNNlll (N=Number, l=lower case letter) and my password.
Even tried it with the account name/ and the email name (thought that had to
be done in the old gte mail) all give me the same error. When I look at the
Verizon setup page, mine is a exact copy of that one, so I am really stuck
on this one !

Pick just one. ZAP is the best of the lot you have.

Replace McAfee Privacy with a hosts file; maybe, if you really need
something like that, Proxomitron.

This site is kind of unfortunate, but the guy does link other providers of
hosts files:

http://www.smartin-designs.com/

The nice thing about a hosts file is that you can edit the file yourself,
easily enough; customize it to your tastes.

> Virus, AVG 6, Sophos, Norman Antvirus, McAfee Virusscan
> Pro, Norton Antivirus, IPE antivirus.

Only one "on access" scanner at a time. More than one will cause problems. I
ran into such a problem, though it wasn't from multiple on access AV
scanners. I run a mail server, and I wanted to set up an AV policy to scan
email. NAV 2003, which I use for on access, wouldn't work smoothly with
Mercury Mail. NAV always throws up a window to announce what it is doing;
the command line /noreports switch only force the window to close after
opening. I wanted it to never open because it would steal the focus from
whatever task I was running.

I set up the Mercury Mail AV policy with F-Prot for DOS, instead. This was
acting in an on demand fashion. Unfortunately, Mercury Mail would write a
file with the incoming message to "scratch" folder, and the on access
scanner would nail it. This prevented the on demand scanner from finding the
virus, and passing the result to Mercury Mail; which did what mail servers
are supposed to do, in the absence of contrary instructions: delivered the
infected mail to the account.

In my case, the solution was to exempt the scratch folder from the on access
scan. Now NAV leaves the file alone when Mercury Mail writes it, F-Prot
scans that folder, passes a result code back to Mercury Mail, and the server
deletes the message undelivered.

The point is, having two AV programs active simultaneously can lead to
ambiguous, and dangerous conditions. As I think I mentioned before, know
your tools. Only run one AV program on access, reserve the rest for on
demand scans.

Last question first; WinXP Pro's FW won't stop outbound calls, ZAP will.
Stick with ZAP.

For a dial-up service, look at the SMC Barricade:

http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?sec=Products&pg=Product-Details&prod=67&site=c

Very nice router. NAT makes a respectable firewall, and some firmware
version of the Barricade have limited SPI blocking. You can hang your modem
off of the serial connection on the router. I used to use an SMC Barricade
7004 BR, but I think the last firmware upgrade killed it. It wasn't offered
to U.S. users, so I was really not supposed to install it.

Or look at D-Link:

http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=64

Asante used to make a router with a serial port, too.

Hi
Thanks for all the replies, I should infrom you though, that the
OP is a hoaxer and is spoofing my ID, I never post using Microsoft
CDO (whatever that is).
The set-up he describes is probably actually his own set-up and he
appear to be using it to make me appear as dumb as he is.
Still I guess it is fairly harmless and better than him amusing his small
mind
by making hoax calls to the local emergency services.
